Hello all.

I've been looking for a while and was the winning bidder on an ebay auction for a 2006 260 Sundancer. Pewter hull, trailer, windless, generator, full canvas, heat & air...
plus all the stuff every 260 has. Basically 60k for everything. Planning to surprise the family!

I'm really excited about it and getting it into the water. I'm sure I'll have lots of questions being the do it yourself type and enjoy the maintenance part of vehicle ownership as well.

First thing will be adding the snap-in carpeting as it's missing on mine, plus checking all the service stuff. Seller says everything just serviced but you never really know.

Any suggestions you folks might have would be great.

I'll post some pics once I've got her.

Welcome to CSR!

You and your family are going to have a blast this summer. Take it slow, be safe, lay off those trim tabs.

Has the boat been delivered or have you picked it up yet? Inventory the dock gear. You'll need fenders, dock lines, a boat hook (helpful, but not 100% necessary), life preservers (a couple for kids, one or 2 for infants, several adult of various sizes, one throwable), paper charts of your area, a GPS chip of same if you have one, a tool kit, medicine kit, flares, and about $500 - $1000 more junk from West Marine than you could even think about right now.

That pretty much covers it - except for water under the boat and sun, babes, family, friends, and beer on top.

Sean,
1. Welcome to CSR!
2. Congrats on choosing/winning the bid on a Sea Ray.
3. Pewter...sweet.

Best advice I can offer is to read as much here on CSR as you can. Hopefully your bid was contingent on a survey & sea trial. I'll also suggest you create a long checklist of your own to work from during the survey.

I don't know how much boating experience you have so I'll throw the safety word out there. I myself am by no means a veteran but I've learned alot here & encourage you to "ask & read".

Again, welcome to CSR.

Congrats and good luck with it! Hopefully you do have a seatrial and survey coming up...

Be sure to read about managing the trim (both drive trim and trim tabs) on this generation 260 ('05-'08). There is a post on the site all about it for this boat. Not a big challenge but you'll want to understand why she will list as you come on plane if you are not doing anything to actively manage it.

So YOU won that auction!! I was watching it just out curiousity because that boat looked very nice and well equipped. One of the nicer 260s I've seen out there. Read alot on this and other boards and you'll gain a wealth of knowledge. Read your manuals too. I will read through mine here and there and this is my 3rd boat.

I’m curious how this works with ebay.

Were you able to see the boat, do a test drive, and have it surveyed before you needed to exchange ownership?

Sale is contingent on a satisfactory inspection.. I am going to drive down to LA to pick her up, maybe at the end of the week.

I did a search under 260, but did not come up w/ the thread on the trim tabs- can you guys explain? Think I should hire someone to go over the boat or take it to a Sea ray dealer?

Here's the original thread http://clubsearay.com/forum/showthread.php?t=3253 - findings start around post 65.

Here's one that benefitted from the post, http://clubsearay.com/forum/showthread.php?t=12800

Like Dave S, I figured this out the hard way (trial and error).

HIre a surveyor in LA to go over the boat. You say the sale is contigent on inspection so if you bring a surveyor the seller should be worried if the boat is in as good of contition as he says. The 260 is a great boat that you will love for many years. I have. As stated learn to use your trim. Dave S will chime in here shortly i'm sure with the link to the thread.

Congrats on hte new boat and don't hesitate to ask any questioins

If you're considering getting a trailer for it, the $2000 for the magic tilt advertised in the listing ought to be a steal. Magic Tilt makes good ones and to get a new one for that boat will likely run you at least $4000 and probably closer to $5k.

I have arranged a survey with a guy the local (LA) Sea Ray dealer recommended- Aurthor Terry Co. $450, but might be the best $$ I spend! Thanks for the advice!

Yeah, I'm buying the trailer- $2k seemed like a good deal (and also where I came up w/ the $60k).

Thanks again- I can't wait to see the look on my wife face when I pull this into the driveway. May need to video the reaction. I suppose most would have discussed this with their partner before buying! I did ask her what she would think of owning a boat and she said it sounded like an excellent idea. However our last boat was a 16' bowrider so she probably has that in mind.

Probably won't do the quarter as I'll make the 7 hr drive, pickup the boat and head right back.... really need to do the overnight thing there anyway.

uh.... so.... your wife doesn't know?

You're a brave, brave man!

Good luck with the introductions of her and the boat!

Could be the greatest or worst day in his married life....
Best of luck my friend.

A few years ago I asked her what she'd think of me buying a racing kart... right after I purchased an open-wheel race car (formula continental). When I pulled up with that one there was definately a look of confusion... "that's a kart"?? Well, kinda.

I suppose she is probably becoming desensitized.

We want to see the video...get a neighbor to record it going down...:wow:

Thank you for explaining how you are getting a survey. I am not familiar with how ebay works with major purchases.

Also thanks for sharing the surprise your wife story. Please let us know how it goes.

I remember a craigslist ad where a guy was trying to sell a motorcycle fast. The last line of the ad was something like “I thought I had permission from the wife to get this but apparently buy whatever the phuck you want does not mean what I thought it did.”

LOL

I'm with Chuck....VIDEO is a must in this situation. If for no other reason than to provide the rest of us with the fleeting thought that "yea...this might work in my house".:thumbsup:
