Just move to Ft Lauderdale, looking for boating Families in the area

Yup I wss refering to boca bay I guees. Just inside the inlet. The first time I went they haf volleyball nets set up in the middle of the bay in about a foot of water. People and boats every were. Had a blast. Once he tide starting coming in the water went from murky green to cryatal clear blue. Put my scuba gear on and went treasure hunting lots of cool stuff down there

How far up from port Everglades is boca bay? If I go up the ICW how long will it take me?

The end of July trip to Bimini also interests me....

about 2 hours or maybe a little more. It depends on the bridges and your boat's clearance. You could also run up on the outside and come in Boca Inlet. Much faster.

I concur...if you are close to the port then go outside. Way too many idle speed/no-wake zones inside for a trip that long unless a leisurely cruise past some pretty nice houses is part of your plan. I go in/out through Hillsborough inlet but if im going north or south I'll go outside out and inside back or maybe vice-versa.

Two warnings though, Boca inlet is pretty tricky because of the bridge & currents just inside the inlet, and there are a couple houses on the ICW between Sunrise Blvd & Commercial Blvd that are often uses for "adult films" so you never know what you might see driving by.

If you want to save gas, go the Intracoastal way and enjoy the ride... It's about an hour outside, but for me between going there and coming back, it's a lot of gas used.

I signed up with the Bahamas fling for the last weekend trip in July for Bimini Bay.. So far I think there are 7 or 8 boats going.. Captains meeting Wednesday night (I move my boat over to Bahia Mar with everyone else then) and we leave first light - around 6:20am Thursday morning, idle to the mouth of the Port and then make our way, keeping with boats that can cruise at similar speeds, and making sure we can all keep in touch in case anyone needs help. Can't wait! Would be great to have as many of you there!!

Barry,

Give me more info on the July Bimini trip? That might be the perfit fit in my schedule. We are dying to get a trip to there, just really want to go with other boaters on the first trip to learn the way. Let me know the schedule.

Here's the link from the Bahamas website.. Their boating flings are great!! I go every year, meet a lot of new boaters that have never been and a few that like me come back each year. The one we are going on is the July 24-28th at BiminiBay- which is a great resort to stay at! Besides registering online, you will need to send in $75.00 for the fees for the fling- There is a captains meeting Wednesday night at the Bahia Mar- I'll bring my boat up from my house and stay at the marina there that night, and we all leave at first light around 6:15am Thursday morning..

Hope you can make it.

Barry

Hello and welcome to South Florida. It looks like you already had a chance to experience the SoFla weather first-hand!
As others have said, you can pretty much expect rainfall every day in the late afternoon hours. I don't even bother to check the weather forecast during the week, only on weekends since we're going out on the boat.
I have my boat in North Miami, and usually hand out in the Haulover area, as well as Key Biscayne sandbar/No Name Harbour.

I know it's a ways for you, but if you ever come down South, give me a shout.
We're planning to spend the 4th on Elliott Key; we need to take an extended break from mainland soon!

Dooley,

Thanks for the welcome. We are having a blast enjoying the area and exploring the New River canals with our dingy. Keep trying to get out and anchor up outside to do some snorkeling but every time we try it is blown out or not looking so great. We are used to being outside all the time in California as we really had no inside to do much. I work in North Miami but live in Davie so we decided to keep the boat in Ft Lauderdale for now so it is close to the house and being new to weather I was told it is better protected up the new river. We are wanting to head down towards your area soon and spend the weekend on the boat. Where do you recommend to anchor up overnight that has a nearby place we can dingy over to so the dogs can do their business? We checked out the sand bar by haulover on a friends boat... Nice but no so "kid friendly" on the weekends it looked like.

Grant,
You're right, Haulover gets crazy with the party crowd on the weekends.

We ususally spend days only on the hook somewhere close by, and the grill gets more use than any other part of the boat.

We live in Pembroke Pines and work in Sunrise. The boat is stored on a rack indoors at TNT Marine Center in North Miami. We're only 15 minutes to the haulover inlet, but it's still about 1.5 hours of intracoastal to Key Biscayne and other places South.

There are restaurants in the Las Olas area that are boat accessible, not sure if you tried that yet?

Grant,

Haulover is a lot of fun during the day, I wouldn't spend the night there. There is university cove west of the sandbar (FIU Campus), its a good place to anchor overnight and many people do. You can also anchor in Maule lake a bit north of Haulover good holding here, lots of room and very few boats. We cruise this area every weekend, have fun.

Look us up on weekends either on our 280DA or a friend's 44 Meridian

Of course you can always just follow the smell of our sizzling steaks! ;)

Ok so went outside and tied up to one of the mooring balls at Barracuda Reef. Very cool and your warm water is awesome. Kids and I had a blast snorkeling and seeing the reef. So what's the deal with this area? Is anchoring closer to the beach illegal due to the reef? My kids want to get closer to shore. Planning to go out again this weekend with scuba gear this time.

Rain in the morning...rain in the afternoon...rain in the evening...winds out of the east! This has got to be the worst July for boating here in years. I blame global warming :smt009

I wondered about this weather. Damn you get rain here. Kids wanted to go to lake Sylvia this weekend to go tubing again.... Not sure that is going to work or not. Might try Sunday, going to work around the house tomorrow.

Finally had some decent weather today...

Nice!

Got back from Bimini this morning.. Trip over Thursday morn was pretty calm about 1-2's and was an easy trip over.. Most of the boats were in the 22-25' range and my 32 Sundancer was the largest ... The trip back this morning was like glass... less than 1' and with the following seas, we made it back from Bimini cut to Port Everglades in 1 hour 45 min... Best crossing EVER!! Sorry you couldn't make it, hopefully next time! Will post some photos and info on my post in the next day or two.. Hope to meet you on the water one of these days, Barry

Barry,

Glad to hear you had a great time. I have been tracking your posts to see how was the trip. I can't wait to see the pics. I really wanted to come but with the new job and the massive amount of work we have I just couldn't break away. My wife and kids are dying to go but for now we are just confined to day trips around here. Definitely let me know when you are going again as I have to go soon. For now got the dive gear all unpacked and hope to check out the off shore dive spots next weekend with my oldest son. This weekend looks like we might make it out Sunday to lake Sylvia to hang out. Last weekend here was iffy and we only took the dingy out to explore the New River and ate some lunch at a place on the River by the Train tracks. Glade to hear it was a safe trip and look forward to seeing what I missed.

We'll be out on the water tomorrow in the Haulover area; either the sandbar or at the Oleta beach. If you see a 280DA with one happy boater grilling top sirloin on the swim platform, come on by and say hello!
