Hello everyone,

We just relocated from Southern California to Ft Lauderdale area. I have 2 boys and a girl 12-15 in age and love boating. Just got a slip off of the New River and are starting to explore the area for day and weekend boating lifestyle. We had lots of boating friends in So-Cal that we spent our weekends with that shared our love of boating and being on the water and we miss them dearly. We are looking to find some new friends in the Ft Lauderdale area that we can do the same. We have found that while we have lots of friends here already, we all know that hanging out with other boaters is much more fun as they just "get it". If you are doing any local boating adventures, raft ups, overnights on the bay, local trips etc please let us know as we enjoy meeting new families and people that enjoy boating and the laid back lifestyle.

Hope to hear from some of you soon and see you on the water

Hi Grant,

Welcome to Fort Lauderdale!! Where on the New River do you keep your boat? I live all the way west off of the New River and though have not used my boat much this year, I'm getting it ready for some summer fun both around here (mostly Lake Sylvia near the Bahia Mar/Bahia Cabana area) and a trip with the Bahamas Boating Fling the end of July to Bimini Bay Resort where there are anywhere from 10-20 boats that go over and have a fantastic time and a great way to make new boating friends!!

Send me a message and we can exchange numbers an meet up one day soon.. I have some work to do on my boat with my starboard engine that's keeping me at my dock for now, but there are also some local groups that do raft-ups and get toethers both at Lake Sylvia down here and Boca Lake up in Boca behind the Resort.

Barry thanks for the info. I keep my boat on a canal in Citrus Isles which is just past Davey Rd. Not knowing where I wanted to dock I found this private dock for now to keep in at. Canal is a little tight for my likings but it works and is close to our house in West Davie. Made our first trip to Lake Sylvia and loved it. Nice and quiet compared to the sandbar and seemed like a little more refined crowd. Had some fun there with the kids swimming and then went out in the ocean for a nice run. What is it like like anchoring just off the beach? Loved the blue water out there. Definitely would like to make the trip to Bimini in late July, that timing might be just right for me. Hope to see you on the water soon and good luck on the repairs, I know the feeling as I am a mechanic by trade and I am always working on my boat also. I am used to all my boating friends calling me for help on their boats. I will drop you an email mail with my info so we can hook up.

What's up with this weather? I wanted to boat this weekend and it has been cloudy all week. Is this the norm?

Welcome to FL:)

You should have moved to VA....if you don't like the weather here all you have to do is take a nap and wake up to the new weather.....enjoy FL....I wish I could be there too

Not at all...kind of unusual to have basically a week of rain and high easterly winds this late in the year. Sunday is supposed to be better and Monday better yet.

You will get late afternoon thunderstorms though pretty much every day from now till late Sept/early Oct.

First cold front comes through the week of Halloween and then we will be back to winds out of the east.

Grandmaster,

Sounds like I should plan my boating early then to avoid the afternoon storms? Tomorrow looks better so will be heading out to the dock early to get some work done. Just got a new slip in a marina right at Davie Rd and the New River. Looks like the Poor Boy Yacht Club but great for me. Was in a private home in Citrus Isles before in one of those 60 ft wide canals.... Boy was that a challenge to turn around in high winds, I was touching dock to dock on spins. I couldn't take it anymore and found this place. Much better and I like it because it is a marina and not a private house. Not sure if we will take her out tomorrow or not depends on the weather, but for sure will be hangng on the dock and taking care of some maint. Hope to see some of you guys on the water, I love lake Sylvia to anchor up and just zone out.

Yes, if your out between around 4PM-7PM suring the sumer/early fall chances are good you'll get hit with rain

Did lake Sylvia in the morning and kept an eye on the radar. By 2:30 sky's were dark and decided to pull the hook. Made it back to the dock just in time to close her up as it started to pour. Had a great day on the water with the kids. Going to do it again next weekend, need to put the tender in the water as the kids are buggin to go tubing. I really want to anchor up offshore and try the blue water.

A good friend of mine has a 270sundeck in boca. Boca bay is almost always packed with boats ans partys are always going on. On the incoming tide the water is crystal clear to. Great times in that bay I would recomend checking it out. As for the afternoon storms there crazy. (Coming from a new yorker) very fast approching and very fast leaving (most of the time) as for the quick storms if you get cought up just drop anchor in a safe place and hang out till it passes because the heavy rains drop visibility to about you pulpit.
Enjoy im jelouse. Great diving right outside boca inlet to. Best of luck
And remeber just north of you is the bullshark capital of the world:wow:

I'm thinking you meant "lake Boca, in lieu of "Boca Bay" yes?

http://lakebocacam.com/

Either way, the point about the storms moving through fast is 100% accurate...the last two weeks here is VERY abnormal

Great website. Thanks for the info. Looking for places to overnight for weekends in the area. Not a lot of dingy docks around the lake Sylvia area? I like to dingy around plus have 2 dogs so need to be able to go to shore when needed. Any recommendations?

If you want to head up to Lake Boca for the weekend, I'll head south and meet you there and we could raft up overnight. There is a public dock near the Lake where you can take your pups.

looks like this weekend is not going to be too good weather wise, but I'd be up for a raft up possibly the following weekend :)....

that would be great.. Let's keep in touch and try...

I'm signing up for the Bahamas Fling trip the last week in July to Bimini Bay... so far 7 boats are going... will see as it gets closer- it's my son's birthday and if his work allows he will fly down from Boston for the trip..
