Jones Beach Airshow 2011 - Zach's Bay

for anyone coming from NJ,why would you not stay on the ocean side if the weather cooperates.would think it would take lots of time off your ride and much less stressful then dealing with the dummies in Zachs....

Ha? What you mean, you lost me there?

....LAst year we anchored just outside of Zachs and had someone anchor on top of us.spent the time fending him off me and listening to his wife ***** about us being to close when I was there first.

Well, after participating in several aquapolooza "zoo events" we kind of lost interest and just try to pick different spots for our rafts. Watching a raft of 15-20 boats dragging in to you is not a lot of fun.

Are you saying to raft-up out in the ocean? I don't think I like that idea, even if it was calm.

I'd like to see this raft.

My latest plan is to take my time getting there on Sat. Probably mid to late afternoon. I am going to come up the coast and meet up with a friend of mine in the ocean off of Sandy Hook around 11:00 AM. (351 Silverton Sedan Bridge - see pic) We are going to troll for blues/stripers from Sandy Hook over to Jones Beach. We are going to stay over Sat night, catch the show Sunday and leave just before it ends.

Vince,

Well, I may get to at least say hello. We will be having guests with us, so it will only be a day trip for us. We will be getting there hopefully Saturday morning, and leave Saturday night.

Does your friend keep that waverunner on his boat?

That is actually one of my Sea Doo's. He purchased a waverunner last year. He keeps it on a floating dock at the marina in Monmouth Beach. Too big for the boat. I was hoping to get another friend to join us on the trip so we could trick, I mean treat him in to riding a waverunner out to Jones Beach with us. Unfortunately, he had other plans. So no waverunner escort. I have ridden jetskis from the Statue of Liberty out to Jones Beasch several times. (with a boat escort) Fun trip, but the ride home always seemed to be in 5 to 8 foot seas. Often we ended up towing them back with the boat.

Ok, so I am trying finalize all my plans, who will be going to the show on Saturday? It would probably be a good idea for me to PM you my cell number, that way when we get there we can find everyone.

Greg, how was the show on Sat? And how was your trip? We went on Sunday it wasnt the same without the Blue Angels or the Thunderbirds. Nice to be with family and friends back out on the water again.

We left Sat morning at 9:00 on our trip in good spirits. :smt038 Headed up the coast with a following sea. Cruised at 22 to 24 knots, life was good. I met my friend out on the ocean just off of Rockaway beach about 1 mile west of the Gill Hodges lift bridge. Just as I met up with him, his boat overheated and the starboard engine shut down. :smt100 I suspect his impeller failed, but don't have the final verdict yet. Waited for it cool down a bit and told him to restart. The engined started to heat back up. He shut it down we started to head back home. I began trolling with him and then my smart craft alarm went off giving me a IAC error 152 message.:smt017 I shut down the engines and restarted and everything seemed fine. I was trolling at 900 RPMs without any problem. I assumed that I was getting a false reading. I stayed with him for about 45 minutes as we headed back to Sandy Hook, then decided to head for home. My smart craft was beeping every 60 seconds with the IAC error message. We had a head sea with a stiff wind out of the South. Not comfortable, but doable. I was able to cruise at 20 knots.

When I got back into the Manasquan inlet the tide was coming in and I had a slight current pushing me. 3 knots? When I got to the train bridge, there was another boat coming out, so I pulled back to idle to wait for him. The current was pushing me, so I put the boat in reverse and I started to turn sideways. He cleared the bridge and I went back in gear to proceed. I put my starboard engine in reverse to try to straighten out, but the boat was not handling correctly I was still sideways and then I realized:smt119that I was running on one engine. I didn't have time to restart the engine since I was now within 10 feet of the train bridge. I quickly turned on my bow thruster and reversed with the one running engine and was able to get through the bridge opening at 45 degree angle. I missed hitting the bridge by about 3 feet.

The rest of the trip home was uneventful. Got back to the dock around 3:00. My Sat trip to nowhere cost me $500+ in fuel plus $200 for 2 IACs. Another typical day of boating.

Joe,

We got a little bit of a late start, had to fuel up, which I was planning on doing the night before. The ocean ride was a little rough, not too bad. It was incredibly foggy a few miles from the inlet, I had a heck of a time even finding it.

Had a great time at the show, not necessarily because of the show, but just hanging out with everyone. Met up with Ron (rcmafgny), Paul, and a bunch of other guys. You are right, it wasn't the same without the Angels or Thunderbirds, but the A10 was pretty cool.

Vince,
Bummer, but at least you got to go out for a boatride...
