Why do you think the mx is better? The m series is quite a bit more expensive.

The M series actually has a slightly smaller mid-bass cone. The actual "effective cone area", even though both are in the 6.5" speaker class. The MX has a slightly smaller (.75") less aggressive tweeter, then the M series (1.0") Pair those differences together and the MX yields a little better balance then the M.

They sound pretty good until I get at higher volumes.

This can be due to more things then amp gain.

They definitely do not sound as good as my mx770s in the cockpit.

Nope! And for 2 good reasons. The easy one, you've got an IB mid-bass diver in a large combing pad compared to an IB mid-bass woofer in a small sealed pod. Next, the 7.7 has about 25% more mid-bass cone surface area then the 6.5, and a larger 1" tweeter. These 2 things can make a significant difference
