Hi All,

I am really praying for you all on the west coast at the moment as there is a Tsunami on its way to the west coast atm. They are saying it is due to hit around 0300 west coast time.

The Tsunami that hit the east coast of Japan has been huge and caused massive damage.

Hoping you all stay safe.

Edit: Here Is The Tsunami Warning for the West Coast USA

The definition of Tsunami Warning is as follows:

Tsunami Warning - a tsunami warning isissued when a potential tsunami with significant widespread inundation is imminent or expected. Warnings alert the public that widespread, dangerous coastal flooding accompanied by powerful currents is possible and may continue for several hours after arrival of the initial wave. Warnings also alert emergency management officials to take action for the entire tsunami hazard zone. Appropriate actions to be taken by local officials may include the evacuation of low-lying coastal areas, and the repositioning of ships to deep waters when there is time to safely do so. Warnings may be updated, adjusted geographically, downgraded, or canceled. To provide the earliest possible alert, initial warnings are normally based only on seismic information

Well the west coast should start to see the Tsunami as of now, you folk are all asleep and probably unaware of it all.

I hope there is not too much damage along the coastline. At least for the most part the west coast is fairly steep off the beaches. Marinas may be affected though.

EDIT: Arrival times have been altered to 0808 PST at San Fransico and 0837 at Newport Beach So Cal.

Cr@p one of Japans nuclear power stations is in an emergency situation as cooling system has failed due to the earthquake.

This was a huge quake it measured 8.9.

Yea, that’s a real problem! Let’s hope and pray they get that under control!

I just saw video on CNN! Watching a wall of water move across land was mesmerizing and terrifying at the same time.

Prayers go out to all affected. I have friends in Tokyo that I haven't heard from. I hope they are well.

I watched the wall come in too. What an unstoppable force. It appeared to stop at a break wall at a highway from what I could see. I hope that was part of their plan to stop high water.

Anyone else notice it?

I just saw that it hit Hawaii with little effect. They are saying primarily that this will only effect swimmers on the west coast and the beaches will be closed. They expect 1-3 foot wave heights.

Saw this regarding nukes in Japan:

The country's nuclear power plants automatically shut down when the earthquake struck, and Kan said there was no evidence that any radioactive material had leaked. But residents near Fukushima nuclear plant were being urged to evacuate, and the government declared a nuclear emergency.

And then I see these;

Don't know the real facts; based on pure conjecture and some working knowledge of petrochemical plant safety systems; sounds like the reactors are designed to perform a safe and orderly shutdown when an Earthquake strikes. At this one plant, sounds like there was a failure in the cooling system during the shutdown. (something in the cooling system caught on fire).

Nuclear power plants have significant redundnancy in the cooling systems. Just because one turbine burns to the ground, that is not necessarily a big deal. There probably is a second turbine designed to start specifically for the case of; "turbine fails during reactor emergency shutdown". While not necessarily a big deal, it still is "not the usual shutdown" and represents a compromise in the safety systems. Emergency procedures still may call for "precautions" like evacuations in case things really go to pot.

Fortunately, the news stories are talking about "smoke from a turbine fire" and not "radioactive plumes". Of course, I am grossly oversimplifying; and there could still be a major problem here.

This is why nuclear reactors have containment domes. Oversimplifying again; Three mile Island had a containment dome. Chernobyl did not. In one case, you abandon a reactor building; in the other you abandon a city.

I work in DT Seattle and I'm two blocks from the waterfront. Port Angeles is about 45-50 miles away(North) and towards the Strait of Juan De Fuca(mouth to the ocean) is suppose to see a surge in about an hour (7:45 local time). I'm going to head accross the street to see if we see a rise in the Puget Sound. More than likely it will all disperse before we see any affect.

Todd, how bad do they expect it to get there? Do you have to ride it out offshore or are you inland far enough? I woke up and heard the news. Thought of our West Coast friends.

Here is some pretty scary footage:

I've decided that MSNBC is not good for my blood pressure. After reading some of the comments left by readers......morons.

It is interesting to note, of the two links Com provided, one outlet is sensationalizing and outright trying to instill panic, and one is reporting the facts. Any takers as to which is which?

I gave up watching all of the Communist News Networks years ago.

Wish I could go down to check on the boat in the next few minutes...

This is one of those cases where taking a drive in an area that is notably above sea level would not be a bad idea.

Scott;

I was intrigued by one of your comments on the news articles I linked.

Both articles read substantially different, and have much more information, than what I read earlier today.

It will be curious to read them both tomorrow.

I heard some talk on the radio about this boat getting caught in a whirlpool, anyone know what happened to it?

Really makes you want the high speed rail and public transit.....NOT!!

I just receiveed this EMail from a friend that runs a fishing operation in AK.:

According to emergency personnel and a couple of fishermen, Crescent City has 35 boats sinking or upside down. The next surge is expected to reach into the City streets. Humboldt Bay is sucking out right now. Can’t get down there to see damages. 101 closed all over the place. Ocean has breached the highways. Most all of our fishing vessels got out of Crescent City and are sitting off shore but it sounds like there will be nothing to come back to.

This is in CA not AK, BTW>
