On October 13 we returned from a 4 day trip. When my wife walked into her closet to hang some clothes she found the carpeting in the closet was soaked. Further checking disclosed water in the bathroom, laundry room, master bedroom and in the garage. Bummer.

I called the insurance company and told them about it and she said she'd call me back. When she called back she had the names of 3 hotels we could check into while the leak was found and the damage repaired. We chose the Courtyard by Marriott because it's new and was the closest to the house. She also gave me the name of a company I could call to have them find the leak and start to cleanup the mess. They discovered the leak; it was in a 18" length of 1/2" copper pipe that fed a hose bib on the back of the house. Total cost for the cleanup, mitigation of the water damage and drying all the 2x6 studs was a bit over $29k. Ouch.

Long story short, here we are, still in the hotel a bit over 2 months later. The water damage has been dried up and things have started moving in the direction of reconstruction. The dark cloud of this mess is that we're going to spend Christmas and New Years in the hotel because the house won't be done until around February 22nd. The silver lining includes:
-we are getting rid of our old, seldom used, jacuzzi tub which will be replaced by a walk in shower
-we're getting our oak flooring repaired, sanded and stained to a medium-gray color (wife's choice!)
-also in the bathroom we're getting a new vanity, new lights, new flooring, walls painted, a large window replaced
by a smaller slider window
-new flooring in the laundry room, new cabinets and walls painted
-Oh, and did I mention that my wife decided that since we're going to have all those workers in the house we
should get our kitchen rebuilt with new custom cabinets, new granite countertops, new island where the stove sits,
new sink and new faucets?

So here I set looking at the same four walls we've enjoyed for two months and looking at a "Charlie Brown" Christmas tree that some friends gave us. Another silver lining is that the insurance company is footing the bill for our food so we will have been able to try just about every restaurant in town.

If I can figure out how to post a photo from my phone I'll post it so you can see our decoration.

Merry Christmas and Happy New Year from your homeless buddies!

Here's to making the best of it! We had a similar thing happen, but not quite as extreme. We were able to stay in the house, the damage was limited to the 1st floor and the basement. Lost our kitchen from before Labor Day until days before Christmas. Insurance company paid for food. We started running out of places to eat! Hopefully friends and family will take you in for the holidays. Merry Christmas!

Merry Christmas GFC! Cheer’s to a more prosperous and joyous 2024 for you and your wife.

You're a trooper. My sump pump gave out a couple of weeks ago and the city water backup didn't keep up. I'm not sure how long it was out before I found wet carpet. The tank wasn't overflowing but it was backing up drain pipes coming into it and water was coming up through the seams and cracks. Oh yeah, the alarm was broken. So a day of sucking up water in the one area that got wet, fans and heater for another day and all was good again. New pump and a new wifi alarm and hopefully I'm good now. I also found out that this would be a non covered claim on my HO policy. I didn't have a sewer and water backup rider. I do now. Never thought about it. I had just transfered coverage from Florida and that wasn't a concern down there. No basement, no sump pump.
But, my issue was just a blip compared to yours. Hang in there.

Just think, if you still owned that beauty of a boat you'd be sharing stories of living on that thing for 4 months! :):)

Happy holidays, @Gofirstclass
