Italian Cruise Ship Disaster

They have called off the search for the missing... may they rest in peace.

And now a $460m law suit is announced.

They have now emptied 2 fuel tanks out of 11.

The problem is the ship is collapsing because of its own weight!

The hull is now resting on two large rocks one at the bow and one at the stern and it will likely slide down into the blue…
I believe they will have to dismantle it on the place!

Snow on Il Giglio island!!!

if the ship were drained and gutted and dissasembled as much as time and conditions allow ...would the channel there be deep enough just to let her go down or asist her into deeper water??

As you can see, the water goes quite deep very near to the wreck. 107 metres=351 feet. So yours could be a good idea... for the fishes and the sea wildlife too!!!!

Having fun with my iPad today

This is unbelievable. I would HATE to be the insurance company covering those two vessels. I think their rates may go up a bit.... Hopefully everyone gets back on shore safely.

Pietro,

That old girl is in fabulous shape. I had a project involving a German owned container ship this past summer that was only 15 years old and it was a complete rust bucket! Seriously though you have to be careful in judging a company by the condition of the the ships in its fleet. These days most ships are owned by third parties, and leased in the the form of charter arrangements to the the carrier. Even companies like Maersk no longer directly own 'their' ships. This is done as a liability limitation strategy where the ship owner usually is a small company with a single asset (the ship).

Unless the management of Costa is extraordinarily stupid, I think we will find that Captain Schettino works for some ship management company whose only asset is laying on her side off the Italian coast, and they will bear the burden of any lawsuits from the Concordia disaster.

Henry, thank you for the clarification. That’s pretty interesting.
I was not judging Costa and I know and old ship can be better than a new one and that’s true for airplanes, cars and the like.
Personally I do like the old lines like the “pacific princess” of Cap. Stubbing or the magnificent Andrea Doria!

She may look good for her age, but search for some reviews. (even some of the reviews with multiple stars have enough horror stories to send me swimming to the nearest port)

I assume that at any given time, cruise-goers willing to board her aren't internet-savvy!
