It never hurts to ask....

I'm reminded of this past August when M/Y Bella Vita paid a visit to Chicago:

FastMark, does your state rebate the off road tax you pay back to you at year end?

Washington does. A boater can send in receipts showing the number of gallons the road tax was paid on the state sends them a check for the tax.

I still haven't done that.

I've never even thought to research if this is a possibility, tbh. But I just did, and the answer (as I suspected), is no.

(One of the badges of honor for living in Chicago (Illinois) is being able to pay some of the highest tax percentages in the nation. Marine diesel was about $4.20/gallon this summer.)

Luckily up at Winthrop Harbor I could avoid the $4.099 diesel by running up to Racine where it was $2.749 per gallon.

OK, I have a confession to make. I must have misunderstood the lady on the phone when we talked. I got the boat to the fuel dock today and was surprised to see the pump price was $2.69.0.

So that was the price BEFORE the discount, not after my $.30/gallon discount. So my price is going to be $2.39.0. We took on 246.7 gallons in the two saddle tanks. About 72 in the stbd tank and about 205 in the port tank.

Cool.

Now you’re talkin! That beats my best price of the season of $2.42 in New England. Good for you, asking, and getting.

I had my tanks topped off by a fuel delivery truck last week at about $3.00 a gallon. The guy’s price usually mirrors about what the average price for diesel at the local pumps are.

I checked into doing that a couple of years ago and found out I'd need to buy a one-time delivery permit that cost $500.

So far, nothing like that is required here in NY.
The guy who does the deliveries is getting a hard time from the local municipalities though. It looks like local Marina owners that have gas docks are lobbying the bandits (politicians) to put the guy out of the boat fuel delivery business.
I know of a few boatyards without fuel docks that welcome him in.
In talking to him a few times, it seems that his base business is construction sites and other places where off road heavy equipment is located. Filling up boats is a spin off from that.
He’s probably about a buck a gallon cheaper than the local fuel docks on diesel and around the same price as the local gas stations.
He is super careful and takes precautions to avoid spilling any in the water. Much more attention to spills than the average fuel dock kid and the DIY’er who fills up their own boat.
Here in NY the off road diesel is dyed red so they can tell that it hasn’t been road taxed and that’s what he delivers to boats.

By way of an update, I got my bill yesterday from the fuel distributor for the club. The final price, including all taxes was $654.03 for the 246.8 gallons for a total of $2.65 per gallon.

Not too shabby. Oh, and the mom and pop gas station that's just down the street from us is now down to $2.79 for regular.
