We plan on expanding our horizons a bit this year and explore the bays and what not that are accessable with our Sundeck. Feeling a bit more confortable after taking the Power Squadron Course with some years of experience...
The admiral really enjoys beaches and what not being able to wade, lay out, etc.....

My question are some nice locations that I could get to with our size boat?????

Hoping also to learn some things/places if we get the CSR Northeast Rendevous together.

My bad Sea Gull but I originally meant salt but am open to fresh as well. We are planning a trip to Winni and Lake George.

The admiral really enjoys the salt water versus fresh...so with our rather limited size boat I was wondering if we had some options along the shorlines, etc.
I have looked at so many charts my eyes are blurry:smt089

There are many possibilities that come to mind. My first suggestion is to consider the area in Fishers Island Sound from Mystic to Watch Hill. FIS is relatively protected (watch out for fog and lobster pots) and has many small harbors and great beaches. It is a gunkholer's paradise.

Watch Hill has my all time favorite (non ocean) beach - Napatree Beach. It is also a quaint town with fun for kids and adults. Mystic has the Seaport, aquarium and lots of marinas. you can even boat to the center of town where the dinghy dock puts you within feet of all the best restaurants. Stonington is great too. You might even consider a cruise up the river to Westerly.

I have no advice on launch ramps in the area or hotels, but I am sure you can find this info elsewhere.

Thanks Sea Gull....I am pretty familiar with the Mystic area and have eaten at a retaraunt right in the center of town near the drawbridge. Sounds like a viable option for me right now. Thanks again for your help
BTW, excuse my ignorace but what is a "gunkholer"???????

To gunkhole is to explore creeks, coves marshes or other shallow areas near shore.

I have several friends on Lake Winni. I have boated with them over the years. It is a fantastic place to boat. Lots of places to explore, many big boats, plenty of service and fuel, and restaurants and ice cream at the docks. One recurring theme has been to be aware that there are many prop hazards. I would not feel comfortable taking the helm for a day for that reason without much more knowledge and experience. You'd need charts for the hazards and because the lake is so big you can easily get lost. A chart plotter would be very helpful. I would recommend a lake Winni trip, but seek more info from the CSR boaters up there.

If you want to try a Boston Harbor trip I would recommend a day trip to Spectacle Island.

try Barnsatable Harbor... protected, great ramp, great beaches.. easy to beach the boat and enjoy the day.. tubing/ fishing/ Ptown is about 20 miles away via cape cod bay.. great motels on cape cod too if you need them..

Without a doubt, trailer the boat to the Cape. You will find sandy beaches that you can drive the boat up on and get out to walk around. There is plenty of sight seeing (seals, lighthouses, etc), and plenty of public ramps. Whether you choose the Bay side, or the Sound, there is something for everyone. The Cape is the reason why my wife ASKED ME to get a bigger boat.

You guys are great!!!!
Perhaps we should do a get together somewhere around the Cape and then the Beantown area??????
Is it Spring yet???????????????????????

No........It's killin me!

BTW....Pm sent regarding rendevous. Lets make some tentative plans

I'm a longtime Winni boater. There are only a few sandy beaches that are boat accessable, most on the mainland are state/town parks. There are a few on the islands. There are plenty of great places to swim, just more rocks than sand.

Navigating Winni is really not that hard. You need a chart, the markers are unusual and confusing. The charts show the safe routes. You can't cheat the markers at all.

Weave,

Bassets Island in Pocasset is a good spot. You can put the boat in at the ramp at Taylor Point Marina in Buzzards Bay (for $10) ... then it's about 5 miles to the island. It's at Red brook harbor ... It gets a little choppy at the mouth of the canal, but other than that you can hug the coast the whole way. The back side of Hog Island is pretty nice for swimming too.

Charlie.....which chart would that be on?
Thanks and keep the ideas comin!

Hey Weave... Consider dropping her in the Hudson - you will love it. From where the Mass Pike meets the Thruway, you're about a 25 minute drive south to Catskill which has a great public ramp, a cool town and a few nice B&B's. It could be a great home base for some great River exploration to the north and south. There are also some excellent, well-protected marinas there if you wanted to leave her in for a few days. PM me if you want specifics, but it's an incredibly cool place to cruise and there are some beautiful spots to beach or drop the hook.
