1986 Sea Ray 270DA - project boat!
Engines
Twin Mercruiser 470's
I recently came across one of these in GREAT condition (solid structure, V8 started and purred like a kitten, zero rips in the seats, ALL top configurations - even had the original owner's manual, etc.) for REALLY cheap.

I almost pulled the trigger, but got hesitant as I realized that the layout would probably only appeal to a relatively small crowd, and I'm just not that familiar with that type of fishing-oriented boat.

I was only interested with the sole intention of flipping it (not that I wouldn't love to have it, but I've got priorities with my other Sea Ray!).

What do you think? Is this a type of boat that would sell easily?
In excellent shape, what do you reckon a boat like this would be worth?

Any input is appreciated,
Thanks!

NADA has it listed at $5,500 - $6,200 retail without a trailer or any other accessories selected. I'd say if it purrs like a kitten and doesn't have any other "hidden" damage it should sell. It would here in FL.

Hmm... it does have a trailer, and accessories (like I said, cockpit cover, full camper top, etc.)

Please don't buy it until you have had it surveyed or thoroughly inspected. It's a 30 year-old boat. It's cheap for a reason. Do yourself an inexpensive favor before you make an expensive mistake. Get the survey.

CK...if you don't want it, I would be interested to hear about that boat (though I would not want it at flipper prices).

If you would not mind sharing the love to another ClubSeaRay-er, I would appreciate it.

NorCal, totally off topic, but I would also be interested in hearing how you like your CM23. If that thing had a full height cabin, I would have bought one already :)

I love the Cobalt. I mean really love it. I really like the classic lines of the boat. When I first saw her sitting in the water in Long Beach, CA in November of 1989 it was love at first sight. I had never seen anything quite like it. So I bought it with a partner and was in that relationship for about 10 years. When I got out of the partnership I continued to look for one of my own but the Cobalt "C Series" boats are pretty rare. In fact the CM23 was only made for 3 years (the CS23 continued through 1989) and during that 3 years only 84 were produced and only 15 in '85, the year of mine.

The Mercruiser Jackshaft, mid-mounted engine/outdrive setup makes the boat even more rare. With the engine that far forward she will stay on plane down to about 12 MPH. And all of the parts are still available from Merc. But it really is a limited purpose boat. It's not really an overnighter and I would never put a floppy old dead fish in it but it is a great cocktail cruiser and a go to lunch/dinner in class boat. I can't think of one time that I was in it I wasn't complimented on her. There isn't too many Cuddy Cabin boats that have full height head room but it is a very deep boat with a lot of freeboard. It handles big water very well and has made the trip from Long Beach, CA to Catalina Island (26 miles) some 400 times over 28 years. And it should be noted that this boat sat in salt water for 28 years and the hull had no soft spots. She's rock solid.

If you ever come across one don't hesitate....buy it. And if you don't, tell me about it cuz I'll buy it. Have you seen my restoration thread?
