Is there anyone on their boat in the Carolinas?

unfortunately i have not had much time the past several weeks to get involved in the CB's trips or much of anything else....we are dealing with health care issues for my mother-in-law which has pretty much consumed our spare time...she lives in the Raleigh area so we have been spending our w/e's on the road for a while...hopefully we will have things settled down soon so we can get back into somewhat of a 'normal' mode....the trip to Lake Murray on Memorial Day sounds like fun but we will be vacationing at Holden Beach, NC that week...

Hey Cliff, family always comes first. Take care of business, and if you find the time to get on the water with us jump right in, your always welcome.

thanks...we are looking forward to meeting the CB members and spending some quality water time together....we all have some life 'issues' that come up from time to time to take care of...one positive way to look at this is at least we are not having to spend the time addressing the issues in the middle of summer which is prime boating time.....:smt001

Hey Cliff, your ladders down! :)

Ha Ha....sure looks that way doesn't it?....actually it is a few inches above the water when folded up once like in the pic.....i keep a couple velcro strips wrapped around it to keep it from unfolding and dropping into the water....i can fold it and flip it up one more time and it will be completely on the platform and rest against the transom....this was one of the best mods we did to the boat....the handle loop above the swim platform makes it sooooo much easier to get out of the water and onto the platform....

Sdarc I was at your marina today. I put my boat on the lake and came to visit. When I got there your boat was all wrapped up. oh well, next time.

It was actually a nice day on the water with the canvas up. There were ALOT of bass boats, and fisherman running around. They are about as bad as the jet skis. They go flying by at 70mph within 50ft. Doesn't really make me mad, but it's funny to hear them complain about the jet skiers! lol

Not sure if it counts but my son and his family live in Cary, NC. I do have a question as I may settle down there. The lakes down there -what is the biggest size boat that seems to work well in the lakes down there? Sorry, not trying to hijack the thread.

Will depend on the lake and its size and what you want to do while on the lake. On Lake Norman, the largest in NC, we are very comfortable with our 270DA. We stay on it over the weekends and go out and anchor and paddle around.

Boats on the lake run the gammit from 12' john boats to 30' to 40'plus. Lot of pontoons and "bubba boats".

Hello Joe,
Cary is just outside Raliegh, and the nearest big lake is Jordan. I've never been on Jordan, but I hear there are boats as large as yours there. Jordan lake is 14,000 acres, with 180 miles of shoreline. I live near to Lake Norman and there are plenty of boats as large and larger than yours there. Lake Norman is 50 sq miles and has 520 miles of shoreline.

BUT, you will only be 3 hours from the NC coast, so the limit is your imagination. I would venture a guess that it would take 2 1/2-3 hours to get to Norman from Cary.

Hope this helps, more questions, ask away.

my daughter and family live in Morrisville which is very close to Cary...i have boated and camped on Lake Jordan a few times with their family....it is a relatively small lake but it is large enough to handle your boat....there are also some reasonably nice camp grounds if you are in to that....the lake is undeveloped....i believe it is a reservoir for Raleigh and the smaller surrounding cities....there can be farily heavy boat traffic during the boating season which i think is partially caused by the size of the lake but not so much traffic that you can't enjoy a good cruise.... i believe Kerr Lake is around 2-3 hours from Cary which I hear is a much larger lake than Jordan.....i have never been to Kerr Lake but it is on the list of lakes we plan to try out this year....

Mike that was the 1st week end I haven't been on the boat(s). Just had the cockpit cover repaired and put that on to help deter water getting into the bilge. The camper canvas leaks a tad.

I went by a couple of "bubba boats" the previous weekend on Wine Down I.... Didn't splash any though.

Interesting article on Lake Jordan. Doesn't sound like there is a lot of room for 40' boats.

My favorite lake in the carolinas is lake Murray in Columbia SC., however I also like LKN, Wylie, Hartwell, and Fontana. Lake James was kinda cool too.

I have concentrated my boating activities on Kerr Lake for the past twenty years. Controlled by the US Army Corps of Engineers, it provides flood control for the Roanoke River basin. The lake has over 850 miles of shoreline and covers approximately 50,000 acres in North Carolina and Virgina. The corps ownes the land up to the 320’ flood storage line, average water level around 300’ so there are very few homes visiable from the water. Plenty of deep water but a few spots you need to watch. There are three privately-operated marinas: Steele Creek and Satterwhite Point in NC and Clarksville,VA. It is best to launch at the public ramps.

Camping is a popular activity in the state parks, with many campsites at the waters edge. Carolina clay dominates the shore line but there are a number of sandy beaches in areas only available boat.

I am on the lake every weekend and many times (except holidays) it feels like my own private lake. So if you want heavy boat traffic, lots of un-natual scenery this is not the lake for you.
Travel time to the lake is about 1 hour from Durham and 1 1/2 from North Raleigh and Cary. Not many SeaRay's around so look us up if you make the trip.

First - thanks for all the great info. Most of it I didn't know. Not sure what size boat I will have by then. More than likely the 40ft will go and I'll downsize to maybe a 34ft. The 270DA I have right now goes this summer. Going to Cary for a visit once the Dr says I can travel (hip replacement) so I may start doing some lake looking. This should be interesting. My son and I both play golf and he now owns a GolfETC business in Cary. Hopefully we will have time to boat. I do have an edge -granddaughter loves boating.
Thanks again -Joe

Well if you decide to look at LKN give me a holler and you can get the nickel tour. One our members on here, Scootdog, keeps his boat on LKN and lives in the triangle area.

As mentioned above, Cary is an easy two hour drive down I-40 to the NC coast. Much more to do there than on any of the lakes.

Had to go back down to Beaufort, SC for the past weekend. Surprisingly it was over 70 degrees both days so back on the water I went. Here's a few pics of some places on the Beaufort River/Brickyard Creek stretch.
