Easier yes. You may get moved to descanso or Hamilton, which is less protected. You can always try Avalon and then cruise to two harbors if nothing good is available.

With my old Sea Ray (a 290 Sundancer), I never had a problem at either Avalon or Two Harbors getting a spot (sometimes due to my smaller size they harbor master would tuck me in close to shore which was great because it was much less rolling). I just traded up to a 420 Sundancer, so it will be interesting to see how the larger size affects availability and placement.

My standard M.O. is to have the family sleep on the boat the night before (home port is Marina del Rey). I then set an alarm for (before) the crack of dawn, and start driving over to Catalina with the rest of the family asleep below. That way I am there as soon as the Avalon or Two Harbors harbor patrol is starting to assign moorings. I have never (knock on wood) been turned away to date!

Hello Cali people, and, particularly SoCal Sea Ray owners! As stated before, where is everyone? I bought my 06 320 2 years ago. Was excited to find this site, but, it really surprised me that the world of owners, and in particular, the SoCal offshore crowd, doesn't exist. I have much better luck on the Facebook page than I do hear when needing any type of info.

Anyway! My wife and I would love to get together with other boaters and exchange destinations, mechanical and all other things under the sun. Can we meet in Avalon? Side tie off shore somewhere?

We're in Huntington Harbor, "Pour Us", radio channel 69.

Looks Like I misunderstood (as I was reading on my cell phone) it didn't come out clear for me. But to answer your questions... We too are in the Hyatt Marina and since our boat is only about a month old (new to us) we're still fine-tuning things. We are hoping to dock out to Glorietta or maybe even mariners cove real soon.

I was a San Diego boater until last Friday, sold out 44 DA. :( We were regulars at the Glorietta Bay beach on the golf course. Love every single second we boated there from 2013 until just last week.

Two weeks ago we did our first trip to Catalina in our new Sundancer 420. It was weekend of July 7/8. Couldn’t get online reservation, so went to far side (Cat Harbor). Turned out there were plenty of free moorings. That weekend was super hot (broke record for highest temp ever on Catalina - over 100F) so think a lot of people bailed.

Will never go to Cat Harbor again without a dinghy. They have shore boat service, but each time you call for it they have to send a captain across the isthmus on his bicycle.

On the plus side, Cat Harbor is extremely calm with no waves or rocking. Next time will reserve a spot @ Howlands Landing through CYC (LAYC) and will bring a dinghy.

@Magic34 glad you finally sold your boat. My wife and I really appreciated you driving all the way from AZ to SD to show us. That was by far my wife’s fav as it was so clean and well maintained. Unfortunately with the hydraulic swim platform it brought your LOA to 50’ and the CYC had 45’s available - but year wait for 50’. Did you sell your tricked out dinghy with the boat?

San Diego here. We keep our 390 Motor Yacht at the Marriott Marina downtown. We frequent Glorietta Bay and venture offshore regularly to see the dolphins and whales. We’ve made the crossing to Catalina on a friend’s boat, and plan to make the first crossing in our boat this September, soon after Labor Day.

You guys are so welcome, it was awesome meeting you. Thanks, it's back up in Marina Del Rey again, he's got it in a 40' slip. Great guy bought it, hope him and his wife love it as much as we do. He has the dinghy too!

I appreciate the kind words. We'll be back out there, more in the Channel Islands area with some weekends in Catalina as my great friend has moved back to So Cal from Erie and the 45' Sundancer is coming too. I'm his favorite boating friend. lol We're heading out that way for Labor Day, dont think the boat will make it though, transport is still a few weeks out.

We are not from SoCal, but we have been looking for a 390 MY (or maybe Sundancer) in San Diego and plan on spending at least 4-6 months a year there once we purchase the boat. It is a great place. We will still winter (ski) and summer in Colorado, but the plans are to spend the rest of the time in San Diego.

Been in SoCal for decades had sailboats then Ocean Alexander trawler bought Searay 48 sedan bridge (2001) June of this year. Presently in Chula Vista marina that turns out to be surprisingly nice.

    Hi JoAna,

I (we) are in SoCal. Long Beach! We dock in Shoreline marina. Currently have a 370 Sedan Bride and in the middle of buying a 550 Sedan Bridge this week. We frequent Catalina, Newport and several other costal marinas. Now that we'll have the 550 we plan on going to SD for weeks at a time.
