Our boat is in fabulous interior condition, but I really don't care for the darkness of the avacado counters/tabletop. I suppose painting here is a really bad idea? From the few camper/online stores I have checked, I can't find any over-lay type material....is there anything like that out there? I really want to brighten up the cabin, but we are on a budget having overhauled the engines last summer and ordering a rope ladder, etc for her this year. I have a pic in my album, but can't get it to upload here. http://clubsearay.com/forum/album.php?do=editpictures&albumid=393&pictureids[]=2215

You could always brighten the rest of the cabin with some orange or lemon accents from the same era? Sorry, I couldn't resist!! You can cut a new piece of formica and glue it over the existing formica or you can find a company that paints bathtubs and have them attack it. I don't think painting would last and suspect it might chip after time. I'm sure they will tell you it's very durable. I'd just cover it with a lot of white cutting boards and call it good. It's not an easy fix!

I don't see anything wrong with trying to paint it. I wouldn't use an off the shelf can of paint from the local hardware store, though. I'd use an epoxy paint like EasyPoxy. What's the worst that happens? You'd be out the $40 for a quart of that stuff. But, on the other hand, it might just do the trick for you.

Small arms fire works, but it is messy.

Seriously, a sheet of formica would be best for a variety of reasons; sanitation being one of them.
