I thought it would be good to have a separate post for this one...
I'm going to be setting up radar on my boat. I have a Furuno 1621 display and Furuno rsb-0060. I'm wondering if they are worth messing with. I would need to buy cables and the cheapest display power cable is $86 from what I see. I haven't found the dome data cable. Is it a standard cable or specific to the antenna?
There's no guarantee they're functioning..., but they appear to be in good physical condition.

It might be better than nothing? I'd have a hard time investing a lot of time to get that thing running though. You can get some really decently priced package deals with domes and an MFD these days (new). Used rigs on eBay can be highly rewarding too...

When I replaced my electronics on my last boat i was forced to cut the radar cable because it was wire tied in a spot I could not reach. With the cable the old radar was worth about $500 on the used market - it was worth nothing without it. So I looked around for a cable, only ones I found were being sold as a set with the radar for you guessed it - $500!

If your new to looking at and understating radar you will be leaps and bounds better off with newer technology. A slight maladjustment of the old units could mean a 1000' container ship 1/2 mile in front of you wouldn't show up. The new units "auto tune" and can be set for different tuning guidelines (i.e. rain or close in vs far away).

On another note in your other thread you asked about open array vs dome. Again in todays world for a boat under 40' unless your are a serious offshore fisherman who need to find birds 15 miles out a dome is the best and cheapest solution. Open arrays are better for long distances.

Thanks alot. Yes, the "need" is pretty limited. I feel like I got what i paid for with the Furuno. Free... I don't feel that investing anything in it would be worth while. I'll probably end up with a dome attached to my Raymarine for the time being and see how much I use it. The Element I have is more of a high end fish finder with a chart plotter. Nice unit, but more fishing purpose built.
