When leaving our Cove to go out the Gunpowder River we have a Railroad Bridge to go under with a low clearance. Leading up to the bridge and right after we clear is a narrow channel you must stay in as the water gets very shallow on either side. Now as we clear the bridge there are several day markers which mark your channel path, the one closest to the bridge has a 6 knot warning marker and then you make a slight turn to starboard for the next day marker which is no more and 30 yards away. Once you pass the first marker there is no speed limit marker so most people will open up right there. Well here is my issue, yesterday while we were going out here comes someone coming in on a 280, and I’m going out in the channel. I see him coming in so I maintain my 6 knot speed as a courtesy to him until I am completely past both markers and out of the channel area, he on the other hand just barrels past me on plane throwing a huge wake at my port side. Now I’m pissed off, and feel to myself why should I be courteous anymore, but I know it is the right thing to do. It just makes me so damn mad that some people out there on the water don’t think!
Is it just me??

Some people take it seriously and some think their in command of a toy. I see crazy things every time I go out on a weekend. Sorry about your experience but you are a better person for keeping your cool.

Bah. Idiots are everywhere. I would just wave at him and move on. Oh, I wouldn't be using all of my fingers when I waved.

I agree.....people are people, Mike.

See fine examples of this kind of stuff every weekend on the water, and every day on the road as a cyclist. A lot of folks are assholes and the number seems to be increasing exponentially.

I agree with this, in fact I call it the “A-Hole Squared Syndrome”. A-Hole parents raising kids to be assholes makes A-Hole squared.

very few practice common courtesy..even fewer practice common sense.

People suck!! Ha ha!! I too see many examples of Douche bag syndrome everyday. Not sure what is happening in society or maybe I am just becoming less tolerant as I get older!

I agree with that!!!!

Same issue on the Columbia River. You are anchored enjoying the day and a complete idiot, most river fishing guides comes blasting by you 30 feet away on full step at WOT! Yet there is this huge big river out there.....

AKBassKing mentioned one of my pet peeves....boats coming by close abeam when there's a full river to boat in. It's always people in a small boat and I guess they're just wanting to impress me with their lack of boating skills or their dinky boat.

As to the people hack mentioned, there are lots of idiots out there. I just let them go merrily on their ignorant way and don't let them mess up my enjoyment of being on the water.

The idiots are frustrating some weekends. Sometimes a shiny boat makes you even more of a target.

Unfortunately, this quote is truer than it shuold be. Kids learn from their experiece and those around them. Too few are teaching proper behavior and respect for others especially on the waterways.

Stories like this make me happy not to be taking delivery of my boat until after the holiday weekend. Every teen with a boat will be out on the James, and the mouth of the Chick is tricky enough without every go fast boat running around.

My pet peeve is parents who think it's ok to tow their kids in a biscuit, on plane, under the bridge on our lake. The speed posted is 8km / 5mph. There's tons of cross wake and I wouldn't want to be in the water when another parent doing the same thing comes through. Stupid!

Just happened to me yesterday. I was out on the Long Island sound, ANCHORED, relaxing with wife and kids and some yahoo in a 36FT Carver blew by me probably 100FT away. hundreds of miles of open water and this moron has to do that. Scared the heck out of my little ones...UNREAL

Bill, a picture and registration number of the offender sent to your marine police would help. The dummy in question is responsible for his wake. Mike

Monkey see monkey do. It happens all the time especially driving in the city. A driver will make his own lane and then everyone follows the leader. The problem with learning to operate a car, boat, tractor, or whatever by watching other drivers is you don't acctually learn the proper operation of your vehicle. You just learn to drive like a jerk. And don't even try to tell them they are doing something illeagal or dangerous because they most likely only care about themself and will take offense that you dare question their authority.

The reality is, that no matter what form your recreation happens to be, there is no shortage of inconsiderate, or unskilled, or rude, or just plain stupid folks out there sharing yor space.
I was taught a long time ago to expect and anticipate this behaviour, then it doesn't come as a shock and/or surprise when (not if) it happens.
The way I now treat occurences is to just say "there's today's A-Hole!". Of course this turn the other cheek attitude is reserved for those occurences that don't end up with any damage or injury to anything or anybody inside of my rubrails.
I dont have the time or energy to waste on getting upset over these clowns....the weekends are just too short to incude any negative vibes!

Yep untill you've put some miles on a bike you don't see how bad some people can be.

Well to be honest at that very moment I was pissed off, but then I remembered I was out on the water on my boat, with my beautiful wife and daughter and about to have some quality time with them. At that point that “A” Hole was very insignificant to me.
