Noticed yesterday that my starboard outdrive gauge showed app. 3/4 down. I tried to (Trim) all the way could not. I then put the drive in the up position, ran in reverse to free any debris. Tried to trim her down; only went app. 3/4 down (according to gauge). Note that the gauge as kind a jumping arould. Any ideas????

Most likely there is nothing wrong with the drive.

On each drive is a sending unit, about the size of a hockey puck. There is one on each side of the drive.

On the starboard side the unit is connected to the trim gauge. The port side is connected to the trim limit switch.

There are two screws that you can loosen, then turn the puck to adjust.

Worst case, the puck is shot so you need to replace it. The set (both pucks) is under $100 but you need to pull the outdrive if you don’t want to splice wires below the water line.

In my opinion, confirm the drive is trimming as normal, determine if it’s just a adjustment or if you need a new sending unit and if you need a new sending unit just ignore the gauge until you next pull the drive then replace the sending unit.

You put it in the full-up position and ran it?!?!?!:wow:

Was the drive physically all the way down? Need to stick your head over and look.

You don't say what year 280? Gauge problem could likely be due to a bad sender - or just needs adjustment. You can search for "trim sender" and can probably find tons of reading info about it.

Edit: Beat to the punch again...

Boat is a 2006 with approximately 60 hours on it. I will check to see if the drive is down completely. Thanks (all) for the insight. Will report back. TG

Thats pretty new.

It could be as simple as the sending unit, the black round thing that lookes like a hockey puck on the starboard side of the drive with the issue is loose. This device is close to the top. Their are two screws that you can loosen, adjust then tighten.

Is there a specific adjusting method? Any tricks to it? TG

Yes and yes. Need more info, though. Please fill out your signature with your boat/engine info.
