In November I'll be driving up to Charleston from Clearwater and going right past the Hilton Head exit. I'm always curious to see new places but due to some time constraints I'd only have time to detour to the island, grab lunch at a cool spot, and head back to continue the drive.

So the question is whether it's worth the effort just for a couple hours on the island? And if it was, where would I head to to eat or walk around?

I live here. Unless you are going to play golf I’d say no. It’s a time share, weekly rental location. Typical touristy shops and restaurants. Beaches are not very commercial though. So that’s nice. Sea Pines/Harbortown, Sheltor Cove and Coligny are the short term places to go.

Thank you very much. You probably saved me a 4-5 hour detour. I was google earthing it and it looked like a golf mecca which doesn't help me since I don't play golf :(

If you need a stop along the way to stretch the legs may I suggest Old Town Bluffton.

Quite a number of good eats located there and some local shopping.

I've been to Hilton Head a number of times and unless you have a destination there's really nothing to see. The time it takes to get on and then off the island might not be worth the meal you would have.

Found the old town downtown and it looks quaint. Not to far off the route so will definitely bookmark it. Thanks.

If you go to Bluffton there is a farm to table restaurant/market just before Bluffton on May River road. Cahill’s Market. Food is good and you can tour the farm. Just an idea for something a bit different.

Excellent.

Now in thinking about leaving mid afternoon day before and getting somewhere North of Jacksonville to spend the night to shorten the drive into Charleston the next day. That would give us an evening somewhere to explore.

I agree with Bill 100% about Hilton Head. Beaufort is another neat sea side town with Fripp Island a few minutes away…

Looks like a nice town. Will do some research. Thanks.
I live in Beaufort, on Lady’s Island. Nice riverfront downtown to walk around and sit on the waterfront and/or eat at one of the waterfront restaurants. Best way to get there going north is exit 8 off I-95 to 278 east to rte 170. Beaufort to Charleston is an easy drive up rte 17.

Any input on the Beaufort Inn? I assume this is right in the middle of the downtown area you mentioned?

It’s nice but old. I haven’t been in it a while to see if it’s been kept up. If money isn’t an object the Anchorage 1770 B&B across from the marina is great. And there is a new inn called 607 Bay.

Well if we stay in Beaufort we'll definitely stay at The Anchorage. Great place and location. Thanks for all the insight.
