Ipod on Clarions XMD3-RET

If they have an Aux input like the Clarion M455 you are good to go. Just plug the jack from the input into the Aux OUt on the IPOD (or headphone out).

I spoke with Clarion tech support back in June about the new radio's. They are suppose to have much better control at the remote control than the previous versions. According to the rep I spoke to, you can access all of your music like controlling it on the iPod itself. Previous models just let you pause, start, FF, Rev, etc.

I have not seen one in action yet. I will look at our upcoming boat show in January and see what I can find out. Until then, I'll wait.

Hello guys,

Even on a XMD1 you can plug your I pod.

See picture below about a scedule to make a aux input to your 13pin.

Skip clarion's ipod interface. When it's connected your click-wheel is entirely disabled. And you're stuck using only five playlists that have to be setup ahead of time on your PC/Mac using iTunes. Just use the AUX interface or add one that sits between the head unit and the CD changer.

I have also heard that the Clarion IPOD interface leaves a lot to be desired!

I was planning on buying IPOD connector that plugs into the bottom of the IPOD not through the audio jack. They also have connections for power so that the IPOD charges when connected. There are several on ebay in the $30-35 range. I was hoping to install this in the dashboard area and run the audio cords over to the glovebox.

Do you also have a DVD player setup? I ran the iPod aux cable into the DVD player (it has a pass-through input) and then ran that to the aux input on the XMD3. This way I get both the DVD player and the iPod through the cabin/arch speakers. The DVD player passes it's aux input through when it's not turned on.

I have a SR 220 bow rider. no tv, no dvd, no cabin, no radar arch!

this does work. I did it on the pontoon! (okay no comments)

Peter, for everyone else do you remember if this is the male or the female side of the plug? I thought it was looking at the male side of the plug. So if you are looking at the back side of the radio pin 5 & 9 would be on the right not left....I think!

Also, you don't have to use RCA connectors. You can make this so it plugs right into your IPOD or any mp3 player with the headphone jack.

Probably easiest if you buy a 13 pin DIN male plug like this and test the connections for the correct wires.

When making the connections on the back of the 13 din connector, reverse the pins as shown on the photo above. The photo represents you looking at the front or radio side of the male din connector.

And if you make a cable with the headphone jack it looks like this (+ switch).

Works perfect!

peter,
I saw something like that one on ebay. Do you know why the cable has the bottom connector and the headphone jack connector? you can get a line out of the bottom connector.

The one I want is for an IPOD video. figured I would go ahead and use that instead. that way if the kids really wanted to watch something they could possible do it with one the monitors from the truck.

The cables with both connectors usually just give you both options. You need only use one or the other. If you've got a non-iPod player you can use the headphone jack. This doesn't charge, of course, it's only audio. But if you've got an iPod, the dock connector gives both audio line-level out and power back into it the unit for charging.

The 13-pin DIN connector only exists on certain model radios. Newer head units will not have it. They'll have a square multipin connector (a custom one) that does not support the same sort of audio override hack. For that setup, called CE-Net, you have to use an AUX input.

I think we were just trying to provide an "aux in" hack for the XMD1. If you have "Aux in" why would you want to try to hack something?

I found a picture of the connector I will be getting.

Anyone know the best way to hook up a laptop to the new Clarion system? I have been resisting buying one of those newfangled Ipod thingies and perfer to keep all music, including playlists on the computer.

Audio signals are the same, be they from an iPod, laptop, old walkman, whatever. The key is in using the line-level signal, not speaker or headphone level. Those are generally too loud for the input into anything besides speakers or headphones. Yes, you can sometimes 'get away with' using speaker level turned down really low. For a laptop you could thus use the headphone jack or get a USB "sound card" device that gives actual line-level signals.

you could always use the 3.5mm stereo jack to RCA connector and connect to the aux in.

I just bought a cheepo "Mytunes" brand at the dollar store for testing. Radio Shack has some nicer ones for under $5

I just picked up a used Clarion XMD3 (has Aux in) to replace my XMD2. I also got the IPOD connection cable pictured below. This cable plugs in the bottom of the IPOD and uses a line out signal instead of using the 3.5mm headphone jack and it also connects to the power supply so it will charge the IPOD when connected. I hooked everything up in my workshop except instead of using my boat speakers I'm using a couple of House stereo speaker (JBL 500s I think). I also have my 60w Kenwood KSC-WA801 power subwoofer hooked up as well. The Aux In sensitivity was set to high and the Clarion Volume was set to 12.

First I connected the IPOD using the white headphone jack to RCA cable picture above. The IPOD volume was turned all the way up it sounded good with no problems noted. I disconnected that cable and connected my new cable and played the same song. I immediately noticed that the volume was just a slight bit louder and possibly a little clearer. I also noticed that there was definately more base vibrations when using this newer cable.

It is my opinion that there are some definite audio advantages in switching to this type of connection compared to using the headphone connection plus you get the benefit that your IPOD will charge while connected. One problem is that you can't pause the song with your remote but you can still mute. I'm considering running a RCA cable extension from the Aux In on the back of the radio to beneath the helm and connect the the new cable there so that I have control of the IPOD from the captain seat. Another thing I am investigating is getting a remote control for the IPOD but the only one I have seen for the IPOD video uses the bottom connector.

The boat is in storage till mid April so when I get the final installation done I will take and post some pictures.

Yep, when you use the bottom dock connector you're getting line-level signals. This is what the Clarion AUX input is designed to use. Pushing a headphone (or worse, speaker) level signal into it won't get you the right signal. In some situations pushing headphone level into a receiver will harm both it and the sending device.
