iphone for verizon

I know AT&T's deal with Apple is up this summer. Will they renew? Will they expand and go with Verizon as well? It would make sense from a profit standpoint that going with another carrier would increase their brand and their profitability.

I too have been waiting and watching as I would like to go to an iPhone, however, Verizon's service and coverage is FAR superior and will not leave them because I want a different phone. For now, my BB gets the job done.

I don't have any secret information but from what I do know, AT&T will remain the carrier for the iPhone and it's unlikely (improbable) that Verizon will see an iPhone. Apple is doing just fine with AT&T. Just like they are doing fine with their computers. They are so far away from Microsoft in the PC realm but they have over $40 billion in cash. With that money they don't need to be like Microsoft and they can play by their own rules. They don't need to be like Google either.

The issue is really the different networks. Apple chose AT&T because their network allows the iPhone to be what it is. You can't surf and talk at the same time on Verizon. All the great ads you see on TV for the iphone where John gets a call, looks up a movie, finds a place to eat, gets directions all while talking on the phone would not be able to work on the Verizon network.

One of the sources I heard said it is 2 years out before the
i-phone would be on Verizon....

Another issue is the completely different technoligies of the two networks. A Verizon iPhone would need to be a completely different phone then the AT&T phone. AT&T is based on GSM while Verizon is CDMA based.

Not only that but the GSM network technology that AT&T uses is in use across the world where Verison's CDMA is only used in a few countries, so Apple would have to make two different versions of the phone that would not be compatible with each other.

This will change as the networks move to a 4G technology. There is also a new chip out that will combine both GSM and CDMA on the same chip, but with 4G coming, it is unlikely that it will see much use.

T-Mobile is the only other GSM network in the US, I believe.
