iPad with charting software

Thanks for the feedback. The gizmos and gadgets available can be overwhelming.

HS – I can’t figure out how to make my Ipad stop going to sleep, and I can’t open the attachment you posted. Can you give this to me again please?

I had mentioned Polar in a previous post as an potential alternative to BlueChart.

Love BlueChart - but just looking at alternatives. Originally on laptop systems - they have an iOS version. The person who told me about was using it on an iPad.

Including a link to a review I found online:

I have not downloaded it yet - but will this weekend to play with some on our trip in March.

Bought an Ipad2 with GPS, and loaded Navionics HD. I didn't take the boat out, but walked around the dock and then placed it next to my boats GPS while in the dock last night. Wow. As others have noted, the map detail and clarity on the Ipad is excellent, and better than the Platinum plus chip I am using on the boat. If I could use the GPS for autopilot, I would never turn the boat’s on again. I also like having the ipad at the helm to access my notes, internet, etc. Good stuff. How did we exist without these gadgets when we were young J

Glad your enjoying the pad. You'll find it a very useful added tool onboard. I keep all my manuals in iBooks also.

I just started using an iPad and a bad elf GPS with navionics loaded. I use this as a backup to my garmin. I wondered if anyone can help me understand the different map choices that Navionics gives you on the app. I understand what the govt. charts are. And reading the navionics website tells me the SonarCharts are charts based on boaters uploading sounder information. But what is the Navionics chart option. It's more detailed than the government charts. Where does that information come from?

I've heard of a few people doing this and sounds like a great idea. Are you finding the manuals online or scanning the originals?

I've found all the ones I have online, haven't scanned anything............yet. Since my ipad is a refurbished (think inexpensive) one it is dedicated to everything boat related and nothing else. It remains on the boat once it is in the water, unless we ride on another boat. I bring it along and they are amazed.

i have almost all of my manuals in my iBooks of my iPad as well. It comes in handy. I got all of them online and downloaded them.

i also use use my iPad as a backup to my Northstar 6000i. I run Earth NC Marine navigation app and have found it simple to us and very complete. I can download and store the charts I need if I will be out of range of wifi or 3G.

I just started looking and have found a few. Looks like I've found my Saturday project! This will free up a whole cabinet in the salon.
