iPad - Thoughts

Thanks... I've been looking to add something like that on my nifty new boat network. Panbo.com has some write ups... The current way I have the NMEA stuff getting to my bridge PC is through a USB connection and a mux... and then I have to run a serial port splitter app to get the data on multiple COM ports so multiple apps on the PC can see it (WxWorx, Coastal Explorer, etc).. So it seems you have to do something similar with the IP based stuff with having an app run on the device.

Wonder how all this stuff works on a Mac....

I can't remember which Nav app I was playing with at the time, but I did find one that didn't need to see the data over a COM port - but could just yank it right from the IP address.

Once the boat is back in the water I'll get to play and figure all this stuff out again.

If you get the 3G, get the unlimited data plan. I'm only 2 weeks into mine and I've already clocked 3 gigs of data.

Cool...that's good to know too. Maybe a matter of preference. Hope everyone got the update that we pushed out today.

I just installed it too. Nice work! One question - should the maintenance costs be automatically applied to the Expense log?

OK... I went and bought the iNavX thing last night...

The drawing speed and chart loading speed sucks. It has the same issues as MacENC. Coastal Explorer has better algorithms... Lord knows they are not running on better hardware.

My 2 cents.

Sorry to hijack -- the Expense Log keeps track of non-maintenance expenses such as fenders, a new anchor, propane for the grill, etc. Maintenance and expense items get added to the reports and you have the option to add expense items to the TCO report. For example I don't want to include paper towels from Target in my true total cost of ownership but I do want a record of the purchase.

Everyone please contact me directly about Boating Suite rob@boatingcafe.com. Better yet, start a discussion at http://boatingcafe.com/forums/. I don't want to abuse Jim's generosity or hijack threads.

BACK TO THE ORIGINAL THREAD -- sorry.

Thanks for the explanation. The hijack was my doing...

Anyone tried Motion X GPS on the iPad? I use it on my phone every time I go out. The performance is speedy on the phone. It's not a true chartplotter and it doesn't have the detail the iNavx and Navionics has though.....BUT it's only $2.99 and it's great for marking and navigating to waypoints.

For charts, navionics is much better. Just that they haven't come out with an iPad update. Apparently you can import navionics charts into inavx, but I think you have to have an account through... I forget the name. It's on their website.

The Iphone navionics scales pretty good on the iPad.

I finally got my camera kit. Allows you to either hook up a camera or pop in the SD card and import pics and video into the iPad. You can also plug a USB keyboard into the iPad. It's two connectors, 1 USB connector and 1 SD connector.

I just order the 3G 64Gb iPad last night for "delivery by May 28". Apple is finally launching later this month to the Great White North. I'll have some catching up to do!

The ipad... It sucks, its a blown up iphone don't waste your money on it 2 thumbs down on the ipad good job Steve Jobs on making a POS ipad....Get an iphone and load Navionics for $20.00 in the app store its worth it and if you have a jailbroken iphone you can display it on any size monitor WOW...THAT'S A LOW PRICE...

Just discovered Zinio for the ipad. basically a magazine store where you can download a billion magazines in PDF, some have video too, but basically laid out the same as the paper versions. About the same price as a paper version for each issue too. So far there's a lot of mags available with more added weekly. Stores them on the ipad so you can read them whenever.

I wish there was a way to transfer the subscriptions I have in paper version to digital, but i haven't found a way to do that yet.

Has anyone had a problem with the screen, I got one for my wife as a mothers day gift and a ¼ of the screen looks like a bar code.

I would try a hard reboot, if that doesn't work then take it back.

It seemed like a bad solder joint, if you tapped on the back the screen would temporarily clear.

I’m waiting to get a new one, they were out of stock when I returned it.

Just had my first overheat shutdown today. 10 min in direct sunlight (bright, noon, no clouds) I got a big warning sign, it shut down. Closed the case for a couple of minutes and it came back on. It just seems to happen when it's flat and the sun is beating directly on it.

Wonder how things like that will affect it on the boat? I also heard that the glare is so severe it's useless outside....do you guys find that to be true?

Regarding inland navigation w/ the iPad and iNavX, I wrote to x-traverse to find out whether the OH river was covered from Pittsburgh to Cairo.

To paraphrase, they explained that they weren't going to go mile by mile to find out, but that they used a portion of the USACE data and that downtown Louisville is on there. Doesn't exactly leave me with the warm fuzzy I was looking for to rush out and buy the package for the river.
