Hey everyone I want to see your iPad mount if your using it on a boat! I plan on installing something on my boat this summer so I may use Inavx.

I see the mounts from Ram and gotta believe someone has used one!

Agee with SeaSucker. I have it and like its holding power, especially in rough water. I put up by helm and use many IPAD functions at touch of screen. Two versions available--recommend version with two suction devices. Pricey ($94) but worth it in my opinion.

Atch is pic of IPAD mounted at helm using SeaSucker. In my opinion, this is great addition as it: 1) Provides Chartplotter + GPS redundancy; 2) Provides ability to quickly scan through charts (if charts uploaded as application) irrespective of what on-boat Chartplotter is oriented; 3) Provides overhead imagery of location and marina upon entry, etc. Mounting at helm also gives you ability to plug-in your IPAD using DC adaptor. BL: I love it and believe it is revolutionizing boating chartplotting, communication, etc. View attachment 18681

If you want really good GPS redundancy add in the Bad Elf GPS adapter to your IPad, no WiFi or 3 or 4 G needed.

I personally do not believe the ram sucker would be strong enough for marine/boating use. This is especially true during larger waves & sea states. I went with larger SeaSucker for this very reason--didn't want to lose $900 IPad to it bouncing around the boat. Old adage of better safe than sorry.

I went with the sea sucker too. It's much more rugged and it has an indicator that let's you know if it's loosing suction.

Or if you happen to have a Bluetooth gps laying around like I did you can jailbreak the iPad and for $5 get BT GPS and re-use the gps. The iPad does not support serial BT so that is why you need the Bad Elf or jailbreak and get the software stack. Works great with the navionics HD charts.

I recently purchased an Ipad 2 64 Gig wifi 3G. I also purchased the Ram-A-Can II mount with the Tab-Tite Cradle Product Numbers: RAM-HOL-TAB3U RAP-299-2U for our 240 Sundeck (scroll down on the link). It fits the cup holder perfectly and is stable. It is protected from spray and splash but not rain. I am working on that. My top will usually be up if it is raining.

I was suprised that the screen is very visible in brite sunlight (without my polarized sunglasses on), there is some glair. Once you have activated a data plan the GPS system will work with or without a wifi or cell signal. The Navionics program works great except for the fact it does not have a heading up capability, I am able to work around that by locking the screen auto rotate and repositioning the Ipad.

I would've assumed that GPS would be active even without a data plan. Not true?

I spoke to the Geniuses (their term not mine) at more than one Apple store, and they told me the built in GPS would not work until it was activated by a data plan. I spoke with customer support at Navionics and they told me the same thing. I have turned my wifi and data systems off and my position does change when I use Navionics. Several of my other gps based programs do not work when wifi or 3g is turned off.

Well I have an Ipad 1 I guess you would call it and Navionics and a data plan. When I went cruising it lost track 3G signal and placed my track as a dotted line which it imposed as a straight line path over land, until it picked up another cell tower. I was still out in the water, so the tracking back at that point over the water where it obtained a new cell tower signal.

So the only part of this I am buying with the GPS working bit of this thread with 3/4 G or Wifi, is only as long as you are in an area which has coverage, no signal, no GPS.

I corrected this by obtaining a BadElf GPS chip and plugging into my Ipad. It connects to the actual navigation satellites, same as your on board GPS system does on your chart plotter. It is claimed to work to 60,000 feet and 1,000MPH.

The Navionics user manual for the Ipad clearly states that Tracks will be saved and accurate ONLY when a wifi or data connection is available. I do not know anything about the original Ipad and or its GPS capabilities, I do know the GPS in my Ipad 2 does work without wifi or a data connection.

EDIT : I think the Bad Elf GPS Chip would be a great item to have in marginal gps coverage areas. I might have to get one.
