Are there any newer boats out there with an inverter as an option? I am going to add one this year and thought it would be easier to just replace my power panel with one that is prewired for an inverter option. Before I go an download every brochure and manual, I thought I would ask. Thanks.

Brian- I saw a 480 with an inverter system once. I did not notice how he tied into the electrical system, but he had Trojan AGM batteries under the port/VIP bed. That did away with the slight starboard list common to these boat.

The fridge and freezer may do OK on a large inverter system, but what about AC? In the Bahamas or even in SC, you'll need air to sleep. No inverter/battery system will run air sufficient to cool that boat.

I added one just for the fridge/freezer/TV during extended cruises. I live in the pacific northwest so AC at night isn't an issue...

It uses the bow thruster bank, I replaced the thruster charger with a 3000w/24v charger/inverter.

I don't think there are any OEM systems on Sea Rays. I used the thruster bank as MadDog did, but kept the original charger and added an inverter only.

I don't think the setup that Matt describes would comply with ABYC standards. I thought batteries, even AGM type were a no-no in living spaces.

It would be "relatively" (!!) simple to add an inverter without messing with the AC panel. You can purchase an automatic transfer switch, placed inline with the shorepower leads to the panel selector switch. When there is no AC current detected, it automatically switches over to battery (inverter) power. This becomes more complicated if you need to feed dual shore power inlets/panels.
Obviously, because the entire panel is made hot, you have to be careful about which AC loads you switch on to avoid overloading the inverter.
