Hello to the Sea Ray forum!
After being raised on and around old wooden boats my entire life it was time to make a change to something that doesn't need the same TLC. My 28ft Constellation is already sad for the change, as am I in many ways. My fathers 50ft 1928 Elco Flattop Cruiser recently moved on to a new lease on life with McMillen Yachts in RI. My Connie probably won't get that same reception, anywhere.

I am getting familiarized with the 370 Aft Cabin (DA is the official designation, right?) and it's less and less daunting each time I spend some quality time on it. Due to other distractions (aka house renovations) we only went out a few times, and can't wait for a full season next year. We were looking to see what was out there, for a next year purchase, and this one popped up in the neighborhood and checked every box, except diesel, so we jumped on it.

I have a key question (for now!), which may only be known to the Aft Cabin crowd - where in the world is the 3rd AC unit????? I have been in every compartment, hatch, nook and cranny, and I cannot find a third one anywhere. The fwd cabin under the bunk, salon next to the sofa and ????? It has 3 breakers, 3 controls, and specs say 3 units, but it must be invisible! I did not have the opportunity (reason?) to turn it on since we bought it, as I could follow the noise, and now too far from 30a power in storage to try. It was on for the survey, so it's gotta be somewhere!

And a rather generic question - is there such a thing as used gensets? The Westerbeke 9.6 was reported as running, and I heard it run, but stops as soon as the switch is released. The sensor board has been replaced 3 times due to a fried diode, so that suggests a sensor failure, but there was that 'funny spot' behind the starter, painted the right color red no less. Yeah, not so funny when I got to it. It threw a rod on cylinder 2, and someone removed the piston, rod & connecting cap, and covered up the hole in the block with Marinetex, and jbweld over that. The oil journal is wide open, so it'll never build pressure, therefore shuts down. The seller says he used it last season, then it stopped working. Maybe it was plugged and the plug failed on him? I have no reason to believe that he blew it up. He runs the marina where it is, so I doubt he would have covered it up, knowing we intended to keep it there, so maybe the oil journal was plugged and then opened up? No rebuild chance that I can see given the age and no block to be had, plus it probably does not make sense to fix it regardless. New gas ones seem to be rare, and very expensive. Diesel conversion is always an option (I do all my own work), but they are just as expensive, plus the extras to convert.

I look forward to contributing here when possible!

Welcome aboard John. The Aft Cabins are AC. DA is for Sundancer.
Hope these help.

Thanks for the welcome! The Broward place looks amazing. Not sure a damaged crank and block suffices for a rebuild.
I had a 'duh' moment, I can see if the previous owner knows. He only had it for 2 seasons, and not sure he looked too closely at them, given the filters I found.

Hello, and welcome to the cult! You’ll find lots of very knowledgeable folks here with a ton of good data, opinions, and suggestions!

The Admiral and I lived on a 440 MY, which has an aft cabin, also. Great, great layout. We only had two AC units, did not have air in cockpit or fly ridge. We were berthed in Benicia, CA, which is in the Carquinez Strait, just off the San Francisco Bay. We loaded up our Son, Daughter-in-Law, & Granddaughter and took the 440 on an extended trip into San Francisco Bay and cruised right to the Golden Gate Bridge. Cruised within 50 yards of the seaward side of Alcatraz Island (because of the incoming ocean tides depths there are over 100 feet, straight-down drop) and a whale blow right at our bow at the island. Sure miss that boat and those trips!:(

We looked an older (1984?) 44MY, and it was so worn out we hardly noticed if we liked the layout. But it had diesels, sigh. We made a far better choice on the 370 in the end.
One of my fondest trips was 8 days anchored in NY Harbor off Governors Island for July 4th 1976 on my fathers Elco 50. And worst was returning from there being chased by a massive storm. 9knts doesn't make for much of a chase, we averaged pbly 3knts to Manasquan. Me and a buddy on throttles, a seasoned captain friend steering and lookout, my father with charts, glasses and a keen eye all around, and someone on the air horn. And out of the fog/rain/spray appeared a pretty huge sailboat, thankfully not too close! Everyone else was hugging a bowl somewhere. Scary, but the ole girl plowed on thru. I could go on for hours.....but I wont!

AC was on my short list before I bought my DA (Aft Cabin versus Sundancer).

I grew up with woodies as well in the mid to late 70s. Been a fiberglass guy since 2000 though :)

Pleas update your profile so we know where you boat.

On my 400da, the 3rd AC unit is under the helm bench, and it provides air to the cockpit.

Regarding used generators, yes you can find them. There is a company out west that advertises on craigslist periodically and they refurbish and resell westerbeke. I think Broward only does the electrical side but you could confirm with them. You also see used generators come up on Ebay periodically. Also, ask around your marina. Boaters always have boat stuff laying around. I have a used 7.6 BTD that needs the back end rewound, just haven't gotten around to selling it.

Profile updated while you were typing!

We had an Elco 36 Cruisette when I was born, upgraded to the 50 in 66. "they" went to Expo 67 in Montreal, and we cruised CT to NC over the next 20 yrs, and then mostly on the Chesapeake till the Elco 50 was ready for a new bottom. That didn't happen, but it's in good hands now. We bought the 1962 28 ft CC Constellation in 2000, restored from the waterline up, ran it on the Delaware for a number of years, until it's bottom needed re-doing as well. Got distracted for too many years, and decided boating overruled working.
Anyone looking for a turnkey project Chris Craft Project? I've got a ton of stuff to go with it, except planking, screws, caulk and so on. I even have white oak for framing and chines. And so much more.

AC Unit mystery solved! I happened upon a 380 AC 'supplement', aka Chapter 12 in the Sea Ray Sport Yacht Owners Manual, and it has 10 times the detail of the 370 AC version, and nearly identical. The 3rd unit is inside the salon wall, stbd side, at the entry door. You can see it by removing covers inside the cabinet below the electric panel. The entry steps have to be removed to service it. The filter is not conveniently located, either!
