I am considering buying a Clarion CMD5 to be able to use an Ipod on my 2004 390 DA. Existing Clarion is an XMD3. It requires a new wired remote. Does anyone have experience and advice on replacing the existing wired remote? Can I pull through the new wiring when I take out the old remote? My primary concern is getting the wiring fed through to the helm. Thanks

You might check. There's a good chance they both use the same cable. M101RXC-RET extension cable. Actually your old remote might even work with your new stereo.

It is definitely worth trying the old remote first. They use the same cable and I have one of each (old and new) controlling my XMD3. You don't gain any additional functionality with the new one.

I think the CMD4 required wired, but the CMD5 comes with a wireless remote. Not 100% sure of this information though.

Keep in mind some people don't like the IPOD interface on the CMD4/5 units. Some people suggest instead using an AUX input for the IPOD (instead of the IPOD black box add-on with the CMD4/5) and using the IPOD itself to do the navigation.

First of all, thanks for the guidance. This site blows my mind for the wealth of info. In an effort to add more info to the data base Clarion did confirm that my existing remote (M301RCC) does not have full functionality with the CMD5. The CMD5 does have a wireless remote but it may not properly work given the distance and barriers between the helm and the unit on my style of boat. I will check if the same wires work. If so, this becomes very simple to do as running the wire was my main concern.

Clarion also told me that the new remotes would not work with the XMD3, but they were wrong.
