Installed new Depth / Fishfinder

Well I just bought a new (refurbished) Garmin color depth finder and installed it yesterday on my 2004 220 Select. A little more work than I thought it would be. In order to mount the screen on the dash I had to remove the dash. The space between the windshield and the dash was just to small to get a drill into for the mounting bolts. I used the transom mount transducer and was able to mount it on the back passenger side and snake the cable up through the blower motor drain hole. This allowed me to get the cable into the boat without drilling a 3/4" hole to pass the connector through. I still have to seal the screws that hold the transducer cable to the back of the boat, I didn't have sealant like I thought I did. I should have a report on function this next weekend when I splash the boat.

Now if I could figure out how to mount some very inconspicuous rod holders for the occasional fishing trips I will be golden.

Here are a couple pics.

Shane,

Installation looks good, when will you test her in the water? I'd be a little concerned about the location of the transducer as the outdrive may cause enough turbulance to distort the sounder.

Where are you considering locating the rod holders? This is my spring project for my 2001 230BR.

I thought about that, but I think it might only be a problem at higher speeds, but to move it over would start lifting it out of the water. I also kind of went off of what I have seen my dad do over the years with good results. I will know more this weekend (hopefully). I also will be curious to see how the factory depth gauge interefears with it as well.

As far as rod holders go, I am not real sure yet. I only really want 2 for trolling. I am still searching for options. I don't want to loose any of the sporty looks of the boat, so they would have to be removable.

Isnt water going to get into that hole, and isnt that wire going to get ripped off the back when driving by being pulled on? I dont know if I'd want a loose wire hanging around, thats gotta get caught on something eventually, no?

That picture was taken before I was finished. The wire is tight against the hull now. Give me a little credit... That hole is the drain from the blower box. I fished the cable through the hose, through the box and out the other side without any modification from the factory setup. So no more water can enter than would normally. I was happy to be able to do that for the simple fact that otherwise I would have had to drill a 3/4" hole for the cable connector to fit through. Once inside the boat it was simple to follow the throttle cable to the dash. I thought about a through hull transducer, but it is super tight around the engine and I believe the factory transducer is a single beam vice dual. So there is no way it would have worked even if it was compatible.

 Ok, ok...I give you all due credit. I didnt know what that hole was, I thought you drilled it out.

Well I finally had a chance to get the boat wet and test out the new fish/depth finder. It worked flawlessly. The color screen is a huge benifit when the sun hits the screen. It is completely readable. I was surprised that it even worked just fine with the factory depth finder running at the same time. They must be on different frequencies. Now all I have to do is solve the floating trim gauge problem and I will be all set. I also figured out I need to re-prop for sea level. The 26p props are not going to cut it, I really need a set of 28s. I could hit 5000 rpm with throttle left way to easy. 26s worked great in Colorado, good at Lake Powell (2500 ft or so lower), but no so good at sea level. Time to start watching ebay.

Glad to hear it worked and it looks good.
I began my Garmin 545s install this weekend.

For your Props, call The Prop Shop in Mukilteo, WA. Ask for John. They are great.
