Inspection today 11-14-07 Wish me Luck

yeah once they're through, we should be like new new. I may need a ride~on polisher but I think she'll be the diamond in the rough we were looking for.
I can't wait to see the new shiny O/D on there.
Since the dealer will have to remove the engine to install all the new O/D and FWC
I have also asked them to install the "Horizon" style oil drain plug, so I can change oil quickly and often.
Once the survey's complete and she's truly ours I'll review all of the items we want the dealer to do. I need to make a list so I don't forget anything.

Todd,

While the engine is out check it over. Like gaskets, belts, hoses. All of the that is easier to change on a stand. Also, depending on the access, you may want to think about the starter, as well. Finally, you might want to clean the bilge with the motor out, too.

Todd,
I bought a new Makita rotary polisher this year and it is superb for compounding gelcoat.

http://www.topoftheline.com/makita-polisher-car-buffer.html

This is a great piece of gear. I like Meguiar's heavy duty oxidation remover to clean the gel, then Meguiar's polish, followed by two coats of Meguiar's flagship wax. For the polish and wax I use a Porter Cable 7424.

Compound with a wool cutting pad at around 1500 RPM. You'll be amazed at how well the gelcoat comes back. I compounded the hullsides of the 420 when I bought her, and have followed up with periodic waxing, and you can still see your reflection.

While the engine is out take the opportunity to poke around the bilge area, do a good cleaning, inspect bilge pump and float operation, etc.

Good luck with it. The pursuit, capture, and sweat equity are half the fun!

Thanks Keokie
I may just do all the rubber(hoses and belts) + carry some spares.
I have a starter from my 230OV that I will have rebuilt here at a great marine electrical service co. He's a one man show, but I have used him before. Anyway he has a great reputation, does great work(at an unbelievable price) and since this boat has the exact same engine as the 230OV It will be a nice spare.

Skip, nice choice on buffers, I use mine on my classic cars and the boat... the photo below is of the 1996 2452 after my twice a year buffing...

I think I'll go comb through a pawn shop for one of these.

Doug,
Do you like that sponge applicator? I assume you are using that for Polishing, not compound. What did you use for compound? Wool or a different foam pad?

Good Luck Nehalennia
we'll keeping our fingers and toes crossed for ya here in Meeechigan!!
I'm always amazed at what you can learn on this forum. Thanks for the polisher and wax info Skip.

.......well survey's done yesterday 11-27-07. Report is due Friday AM............I can't wait....

Todd- I've been following the purchase and just want to say that I think you are just dragging this out so as to make the thread longer than "Presentations" purchase of his 280! Just kidding guys!!!! Sounds like all is going well and I'm glad to see your methodical progress through the purchase. Job well done! Good luck on your conclusion to the sale!

I wish that were the case. I can't wait to post "It's Official!" and then start posting about "leaks" and "what do I do with a fist size hole?", which GPS, 120V Heaters, inverter configurations/hook up options.....before and after pictures....yada yada yada

Hummm....see what you miss when you have to work. Frank is pulling some poor guy's pants down and Todd is stealing his boat. :smt043

Good luck on the Survey Todd!

I don't want to humiliate anyone. I mentioned the price I paid in the 5.7EFI v 350Mag thread
so I'm not sure that I want Frank to come out here pull his pants down while I'm signing the Bill of Sale. That would really be akward and humiliation is not my goal  just a good price. He's paying for the new outdrive too. I can see Frank now, at my dealer trying to pull this guys pants down while he's writing a check for a new BIII O/D installed that he'll never use. This guy is really nice and obviously willing and able to get it right for us.

Well, when you DO get to the Olympic Penisula, remember to contact me and we'll have a beer or three in celebration of your new baby... If not, we'll have to hook up on your or my side and chart some courses for next summer's boating adventure sometime anyway... hope you have good dreams tonight... You'll probably be wide awake half the night thinking of your baby... (the gel coated one)... :smt038

Thanks Doug,
Yeah I can't believe the last two weeks at work. I had to postpone the trip to your side again due to "Customer Service" issues. Anyway thanks for the well wishes and yes I hope to hear good news mid-morning. I'll be posting either way.
Also, I should here from the through hull fitting guy tomorrow or I'll tell you to just order them.

.....tick.....tock.....tick.....tock.....tick.....tock

Didn't he give you some idea of what he found before you see the "official" report?

I wasn't there for it. The service manager at the dealer that I know was in a meeting. So, all we've heard is that the report is due this morning. It's 9:44 AM here now and I have two bids to complete then I'm heading over there..................tick tock....

It is now 10:25. The clock is still ticking......

We are waiting, but probably not as anxiously as you are...
