Inside cabin Port Hole Rings

Hello, i am in the process of replacing my porthole windows and I noticed that the inside covers are held in place with 4 screws that it looks like the previous owner just had screwed into the v-berth liner. This does not look factory. I would appreciate any advise on how it was installed at the factory. Thanks,

I think you will find that the screws actually screw into the outer porthole ring to create a "clamping" action on the hull. You may also find some of the screws broken off.
