If he likes working with his hands, the oil industry is booming in this country and could provide him the job satisfaction and meet his financial goals. But, he will need to move to a different part of the country, depending on where refineries, drilling or pipelines are being developed.

they are drilling every where and a lot of companies are hiring in the states most of which will hire new to industry hands such as yourself I think it is about $80.000 a year starting pay plus benefits.

Oh and by the way the $80.000 is for 6 months since you only work a week on and week off or a two on two off rotation /Hitch

Very best thing he can do is make a business plan first. Won't do it overnight, might take a couple months.

Take advantage of any local resources that can help him prepare it.

Medical equipment repair is a great field to be in right now but it won't make you rich. With an IT background and mechanical aptitude he can apply. I would suggest that he look into it. There is one certification exam that is highly sought after and that is the CBET. That with computer experience can get him a gov't job as a GS-11 or a field service tech with a large company making 60-100k. Search the term biomedical in a job search or job code 1601 and 0856 in fed jobs.gov. The VA is a great place to work.

I wanted to add that once you have experience in the field it's easy to start a 3rd party repair business doing PM's, installations and service for hospitals.

Some good companies that will hire without the CBET include Steris, Getinge, ASP, Philips, GE Healthcare, Fuji Film etc. do a search for medical equipment field service engineer.
