Inboard Throttle Adjustment

Hi everybody!!

Starting to make my spring maintenance list and want to address a problem I am having with my starboard throttle - it has little or no friction the first 15 degrees or so from idle such that I have to hold it in place or it falls back down (and the engine goes back to idle). I have the standard two-stick setup for twin inboards (trans sticks port of the wheel, throttles to starboard) and this only affects the throttle for the starboard engine. I'm assuming there is some friction nut that has worked lose somewhere but don't know if it is in the throttle assembly itself or on the carb.

Sorry if I sound lazy but I am sure someone knows just how to address this!!

Thanks in advance,

David

The friction control is in the controls, not at the engine. There isn't a friction nut, but there are screws that tighten a dog against the throttle mechanism. They are usually under the stainless bezel that covers the panel.......just remove the bezel and lift it away and the screws are near one end or the other. I don't know which controls you have so I'm not sure where the dogs are. Try looking in your owners packet for the Teleflex or Morse literature for your controls or you might find a diagram on their website. It is important that you identify the correct screw since there are also stop adjustment screws there as well.

Thank you!! They are the Teleflex - I will pull the manual and set things right.

Best regards,

David

Please let us know how it turns out.

Ditto. I would like to know how it turns out also as we have the same problems with throttle controls. Ours are the stainless levers with gold knobs. Lack of friction and when "pulling em down" I have to pull one down more than the other to keep the rpm's in sync until I hit idle. I have had someone actuate the controls while I watch the throttle body end and there doesn't appear to be any slack. I have heard that even routing can have an effect on the feel? I guess you have to dig in and REALLY investigate to see exactly what the problem is and adjust it out.

Guys, don't make this one harder than it is...........get out your owners packet and read the Morse or Teleflex manual. There are simple screw adjustments for idle stop, WOT stop and for friction.

As a starting place, disconnect the cables on the engine end and manually set the carburetor or throttle arn in idle position. Then set the idle stop on the control, then hook the cable back up to the engine.

And, yes , a very tight bend in the cable routing can cause one throttle to take more effort than another. Sea Ray doesn't usually seny boats out this way. The cabes are usually cable tied in place to avoid that.
