Hey Guys,

i asked for a humminbird hdr 650 depthfinder for christmas and it gives you the opton for mounting it on the transom or in hull. i would rather mount it in hull, have any of you done this? do you think it will be as good as transom mounted?

here is the link to the one i want.

let me know what you guys thank

I've got a Garmin ready to install so will be interested in this as well.

interesting. I just read the specs on it and it has a temp sensor so if that is water temp I probably don't have that option.

I guess I should finally break down and read the instructions....

i wish this one had a water temp sensor, i think that would be very handy

I'm setting the Carver up for fishing for stripes so I probably did that on purpose but didn't think it through.

If you do in hull, just need to find a good spot with no/ cavitation. Should do pretty good.

I have upper and lower helm depth gauges. The upper is an original SeaRay transducer threw the hull with new read out. The other is on the inside of the boat floor in a bed of cylicone. The cylicone one works better. It has a temp on it. It seems to tell me the water is cold. The one in cylicone I used a full tube. Made bed about 1" deep wiggled the probe in it then covered the probe with cylicone. Had it in use for 5 years all is still well.

The main difference between the two installations is the shoot through will not have as much power going through the water so your maximum depth readings will be reduced. You will still get a temp signal It will just be the temp of your hull in the bilge. High speed performance will be better with the shoot through also.

When you glue it in make sure you place it in an area with solid fiberglass. Also when you seal it in be sure there are no air voids between the face of the xducer and the hull.

I would do the transom type. Had alot of trouble with readings on the last boat, but also had at thick hull. When I switch to the transom transducer. I alway worked after that.

Didn't know silicone would work.

Anyone else do this?

It took a week before the silicone fully set up. The probe gets warm but not hot. I did not use it for a week at first other than to see if it worked. I cleaned area well with solvent, put down 1" blob of silicone, mushed the probe in it, checked to see if it worked, after it worked took the rest of the tube and covered the probe mainly for protection. Probe is in engine room about 1/3 of the way from the back of the boat in the area where all the threw hull valves are. The probe works at 18 Knots and reads up to 1200 feet. It has a 50 and 200 HZ head. You can have both frequencies on at the same time. One frequency low (50 I think) is for shallow other is for deep water. Finds fish also.

What model do you have?

FishFinder 320 Eagle I think, boat is 700 mile form where we live so can not go see. It is not colour. Got it in 2003 I think for my first boat but never installed it. The 50 and 200 head I think are what make it better than the one that come with the boat that is a 120 head. No matter what you get make sure it comes with enough cable if not you can get cable extenders for some but not all models. Mine I could not find a cable extender.

Thanks northern, it's going be tough to find a spot in here

Make sure it points strait down and area will be wet when boat is slow and fast.
You might be able to put it under the engine.
Make sure boat is not double hull in area you put it.
If you put a couple of inches of water in area you are going to put the probe it will tell you if it will work there.
