Impeller replacement

Thanks all, we're going to pull the hoses and go hunting for the impeller pieces to avoid overheating issues.

Question: should we be concerned about the thermostat. The Guage was briefly pinned and the alarm did go off which alerted us in the first place the impeller wasn't working. Could the brief over heat have dmaged the thermostat.

A good rule of thumb is the t-stat should always be changed anytime there is an overheat.

UPDATE: Based on what I was able to find and put together I have six of the eight fins of the impeller. I took off all the hoses and vacuumed. I'm going to run the engine again but is there a time limit as to how long can I keep it connected to the muffs.

I'm not sure I understand your question completely...

With all the hoses attached to the proper spots? No, not really.

With no cooling water (intake hose off) going to the engine? Maybe a minute or two.

Let's try this... what are you proposing to do?

Did you remove the t-stat housing to check for pieces? That's they key thing to do.

I did not remove the housing itself but I removed all the hoses and found one piece of the impeller. Should I remove the T-stat housing all together?

6 out of 8 is pretty good. Where did you find them? The other 2 might have passed thru the exhaust by now.

I wouldn't kill yourself looking for them, take it for a ride.

Yes take the housing off, that's usually where they turn up

Yes, definitely. You may need a new gasket... and might as well replace the stat while you're at it if you don't know when it was last replaced.

When you say gasket you mean for the t-stat?

Also be sure not to exceed 1300 rpm while running on muffs. Your garden hose can only supply so much water and generally not enough to run the motor above 1300 rpm.

Yes. Sometimes they come off nice and clean, sometimes not... especially if they've been on for a while. No sealant - put it on dry.
Awesome, thanks and will post results on the thread

thank you!

Pulled off t-stat housing and pulled out t-stat. Blew it out with air compressor and no additional impeller pieces found. Thermostat look old so im going to replace. 20220507_105712.jpg 20220507_105720.jpg

Make sure you look INSIDE the housing really well (just to be sure) - don't "assume" and just rely on compressed air.

Pulled off t-stat housing removed thermostat and flushed with water, vacuumed, and compressed air. Going to replace thermostat

BUT... you NEED to look inside it - that's kind of why I said "look inside" it a couple times, already. :)

There may not be any pieces lodged in there, but you don't know if you don't look.

I appreciate the reminder. I held the T-stat in my hands, look inside with a flashlight and probed with a wire and my fingers.
