Ike: Deja Vu all over again.........

They just reported on the news that many of the levees in LA around New Orleans are failing from the surge... wow.

Weather channel is showing coverage, I think in Galveston, of marina docks already destroyed. If you were in slip D 47, it's now gone.

The Mrs and I are thinking about you folks...hopefully you have a home to return to.

Just spoke to friends living in Houston. Despite their confidence in the construction of their Houston home, they are departing for their ranch 150 miles inland. They did say they had been having problems with cell service (too much demand?). I also spoke earlier in the day with clients in Galveston who also echoed the poor cell service issue. So I guess the message is at this point if you are having trouble reaching friends and loved ones it may just be too many people trying to call.

Henry

Heard on the news that there's a disabled freighter off the coast right in Ike's path. 23 crew or board. What an incredibly crappy day at the office.

If you are having trouble with cell service. You can still text with AT&T, so far when the nextwork busy message comes up, my friend and I have been able to still text. Also if you are interrested in watching the live coverage you can get KHOU on channel 361 on Direct TV.

Henry, I think you're 100% correct. When we had blackout in NY few years ago, all cell lines were unusable. They simply couldn't handle the load. It took many hours to make one lucky call.

From what I am reading. . .it does not appear that Galveston will be on the "clean" side of this storm. yikes.

Hurricane still out at sea. Water at 9' over Mean Low water. Levies are 17' tall. It is currently low tide.

I was just checking out various NOAA buoys in the Gulf area of interest and came across this one; it can't be a good sign:

http://seaboard.ndbc.noaa.gov/station_page.php?station=42035
"42035 went adrift on 09/13/2008 and the last report from its moored position was 1900Z. It is still transmitting valid observation data, which will continue to be reported here, but not from the location given above.
"

This one (South of Galveston, located here) is currently reporting waves of 20.3ft

Of interesting note is the plot of winds and pressure readings.

Anyone know if mty boats ok? It's in an indoor dry stack at Endeavor Marina. I thought it qas safe but my dad said a dry stack was hit by a tornado. They're not anwering phones.

If that's the marina by the lake by NASA... "No". They had the slipped boats as a back drop on one of the news channels... or what's left of them.

well the freighter survived and is being towed in.

Most land-line phones there, as well as electricity, are down and likely will be for a few days.

At this point, you should pop open a beer.

Either the boat is fine, and you can celebrate.
Or everthing is not fine. . .and you need to mourn.

Either way -> not a darn thing you can do, nor is there a darn thing you can do to even find out. It is not realistic to assume anyone has even gone to the marina yet to check it out. It is even more unrealistic to think they have phones/electricity.

Moral: Beer is always the answer.

It will be interesting how this all plays out over the next few days in the media. How well the Texas emergency management, Houston and Galveston public security agencies, and the feds responded. How well the cleanup and basic services restoration are going. How many dead are found in the wreckage who didn't heed the 'mandatory' evac notice. How the Salvation Army and Red Cross are helping, as well as private sector companies such as Home Depot. When the refineries will be up and running again.

There is a lot of hard work to be done, and it will still be going on long after the news crews go on to the next story. I'll probably log into the websites of the local newspapers for the ongoing news. And I'll toast the folks who did and continue to do the good work down there with a nice single malt, and send a few prayers their way as well.

Without doubt, I think the storm impact was not as harsh as feared. But the damage / death toll could be huge nonetheless.

I will be very interested in how this plays out. Do you remember G.W. in his "command center" just prior to Gustav? I don't seem to recall any similar images this time around. But honestly. . . time will tell if we got the pre-evacuation and post storm cleanup correct.

Yeah it's one of those indoor marinas. So who wants to drive down and check on my boat?? LOL JK.

Wel here it is almost two weeks after the hurricane and the place where i work at just got power yesterday. At the aprtment complex where i live, we were with out power for a week. The west end og galveston was hit pretty hard because it didnt have any kind of a barrier protection from the surge like Galveston does. The other side of Galveston, Boliver was hit pretty hard also. The water surge did most of the damage to those areas and up the bay area. Thru out Houston there is a lot of roof damage and tree damage and fence damage. A lot of light poles were either bent at a 45 degree angle or snapped into. On the bay side up on Nasa Rd-1, they have a lot of boat storage places and slips. Alot of those boats where tossed around and damaged. There is a hwy that runs close to kemah which is with in a stones throw of the water, Hwy 146 and there was more debriss, boats and all kinds of stuff scattered along that road, Im sure there are a lot of unhappy boat owners around here. Theres a road called the blue water hwy that we always ride our bikes on, it stretches fron surfside to galveston and its kinda scenic. It has all those expensive homes on stilkes right by the water, well after Ike came thru in some areas only a few remained. All you see is just poles sticking the ground.
Cant wait in a couple of weeks to take a ride thru there and see whats left. I do live in League city, in an apartment and its about 30 miles from galveston and yes i rode out the storm in the apartment. It was an eyewaking event, but i wasnt going to get caught up in all that traffic like what had happen in Rita, but the traffic during this storm never was bad at all. One of the reasons why is because the city of Houston didnt evacuate this time and i think only about 60% of the people living on the coast left, so traffic was not a problem. In Galveston, Hooters had a restaraunt out in the water over looking the gulf and it got knocked down completely and all the boards and stuff ended up inland ZZtop made a song many years ago about a club called the Balineze (sp) in Galveston and it too was on the water on a pier and its gone. Anyway this will end up being a very costly storm not so much from the rain, but from the water surge and from the wind

I am glad to hear that you are safe and sound. My friend is also in League City, they too rode out the storm. You Texans are one tough bunch:)

It's kind of scary that no one has posted on this thread since September of '08.

Is there any body left over in the Texas Gulf Coast area?

I felt a familiar sickness come over me when i saw that storm hit over there...reminded me of Francis, Jeanne and Wilma through here in '04 & '05.:smt009
