I-Pad, Galaxy, Kindle Fire Tablets

Ok, thanks. I am still a bit confused as the reviews on the App Store say it cannot be used as stand-alone chart plotter using internal gps. Not sure whether to buy this one or navionics.

So I understand that the iDevice needs the self contained GPS that's only in the ipad with cell and iPhone. It doesn't need an active cell connection but the cell-capable devices have a different style GPS in them. (Again, 3rd hand info, and have not tried on non-cell iDevices)

i have the garmin app on both my iPhone and cell-capable ipad and it works just fine. It doesn't have all the functionality of my dash-mounted garmin unit but its pretty impressive none the less.

That statement above could also just be a disclaimer or could also mean that it's not intended to be a fully functional chart plotter style GPS replacement. You can for sure use it to plan routes and follow along while on the boat. You need the wifi adapter though if you want to transfer them to your chart plotter head unit though.

What ipad do you have? The one with retina display? (ipad 3rd gen or 4th gen?). I've read that the OB distorts the pixels on the retina display. Doesn't seem to on my phone. Was going to try the ipad case but if you save one, any complaints?

I have had otter boxes on all my phones and love them. Even accidentally shut the bilge hatch on the edge of the phone and no damage. Lol

I have the newest Ipad with the cell connection. I have no complaints about distortion with my Otterbox, without which my pad would have permanet scratches. It has done the job I purchased it for and would buy another when this one is too bad to use.

My flirtation with the Lifeproof case goes to the Sea Ray Homecoming when Jim threw his phone in the pool while the video was on. Very cool!

You will need to have a cell capable pad to use the plotter feature in either Garmin or Navionics. I too have not used the Garmin yet but what Jim noted is correct.

Sounds great. Now I just need to decide which to purchase. I have been a Garmin fan and used their stuff for years...just got uneasy when I read the reviews. Thanks for all the feedback and help!
