I think I figured it out, maybe, Navionics app only avail. on Ipad/Mac. But it's weird that I have it on my verizon razor smart phone, but that's different being a mobile phone I guess.........I was able to down load the app. GPS Nautical Charts:smt017

These screen shots from my IPad show the entire lake, then a medium zoom, and a maximum zoom near the dam. I have the $49 Navionics app.

Mike, do you have a mount for the iPad or do you just set it on the dash? I am thinking about a Seasucker mount.

Just got home... let me take a look...

Ken, I have a nice flat chart area between the wheel and gauges that I set it in the Otterbox. I plan to replace the Otterbox with a Lifeproof case. Turtle's mount looks good and if we used the boat more I may go that route as well. The new Garmin app looks "better" than the Navionics from what I have seen.

I tried to download the Garmin app but my iPad can't be updated to iOS6 so until I upgrade my iPad (maybe very soon) I can't try it unless I use my iPhone.

I just bought the RAM twist lock suction thingy on ebay for $17 for my ipad mini. I have to say i'm impressed. That is one hell of a hold on there. An option for mounting something without a case.

Tell me if i am wrong, but I read that the Garmin app will not work as a stand-alone unit for iPad, nor will it use the internal GPS...must be networked with Garmin electronics on-board.

Not true. You download the ipad/iPhone app then pay for charts. Once you pay for the charts you click the sections of the coast you want to download to the device, from which point it stays resident and does not require the wifi/cellular signal afterwards.

If you buy the garmin charts for one iDevice you can get the maps on any of your other iDevices using your same iTunes account. Can be used simultaneously too. (Phone and pad for example)

mike. Just got a new ipad finally upgrading from the ipad original. Was considering the otter box, why are you replacing with the lifeproof? Just curious.

Ok, thanks. I am still a bit confused as the reviews on the App Store say it cannot be used as stand-alone chart plotter using internal gps. Not sure whether to buy this one or navionics.

I still want to see the Lifeproof in person, but it is fully functional AND waterproof. Otterbox is not. That is why.

I will add that I intended to use the Otterbox only on the boat, but it protects the pad so well I never take it off. Not as small and chic but very durable. My pad still looks like new. I look at the screen cover on the OB and think: all those scratches could be on my pad instead of a cheap cover.

What ipad do you have? The one with retina display? (ipad 3rd gen or 4th gen?). I've read that the OB distorts the pixels on the retina display. Doesn't seem to on my phone. Was going to try the ipad case but if you save one, any complaints?

I have had otter boxes on all my phones and love them. Even accidentally shut the bilge hatch on the edge of the phone and no damage. Lol
