Hey, Question for all you electronics guys. Have or are any of you using a tablet and then using Navonics or Active Captain on your boat? I've used both on my smart phone and liked both and was thinking of adding one for the boat, maybe Galaxy 10.1 to use along with gps and stand alone Radar. Suggestions are appreciated in advance, Thanks:smt001

I purchased the iPad to use with Navionics. I find it brilliant.

Also spent a week on my Brother in Laws 60' cruiser, in the Whitsundays then did the 540Nm trip back down the coast with it, the first leg was an overnighter.

The boat is fitted out with 3 very large Furono monitors, with radar etc.

We all used his iPad more than any thing else. That was the catalyst for me getting one

I too use my IPad, I have both Navionics and Chesapeake Bay HD, both are fine programs, but the Navionice is best!

Have Navionics on my iPad works very well. I use a Dual BT GPS with it and have had no issues. I have an older iPad 1 in an otterbox case and it works great. The only issue is heat as the iPad gets too hot if left out in direct sun and will shut down, so keeping it out of direct sun is important. I have an anti glare screen protector on it and it helps with viewing in day light at the helm...

I would be interested in what you do regarding radar with it

There are many apps on the market that show boat traffic. I do have radar, but use the IPad as a back up. The IPad's apps are up to date and easier to see and read, where my radar and plotter are older and not user friendly. As a P.S. to your question, do not rely solely upon the app's for Nav / Radar, they can not replace good old common since and awareness of your boats surroundings.

I use Navionics on my Ipad. It's a great tool as a backup to my installed Garmin.

Thanks for the replys guys, I'm looking at the Galaxy 10.1 Tablet, big screen for an Ol' Blind guy.

We use 2 ipads and 2 iphones on our boat. I do have a fixed gps also, but just find it so much easier panning and zooming on the ios devices. I have the boat us. Ship finder, rules&signals, smart buoys, boating suite, iknots, boat trader, west marine apps for play and the nav free, navionics, marine now, isailor, imray charts, eseachart, charts, sail timer, drag queen and yachtie. I have to say i use navionics and boating suite the most and love them! I am not sure what apps are out there for the other tablets.

I just bougt a 370 da and it has a outdated garmin 238 sounder / gps system. It is not very detailed and I do not care for it. My last boat a 390ec had a hummingbird gps system that had a large viewing screen and was color - much better detail. Anyway rather than spending 1K + for a new gps chartplotter I am thinking of using my Ipad that is about a year old with the Navionics app and using it in addition to the gsp currently on the boat. I boat on Smith Mountain Lake in VA and I am not sure what Navionics map app to puchase. I want the best and most detailed one they have --- does anyone have a suggestion
boat.

These screen shots from my IPad show the entire lake, then a medium zoom, and a maximum zoom near the dam. I have the $49 Navionics app.

iPad mini ROCKS if anyone is interested. I think it's a better size than the larger version.

Garmin just released their "garmin Bluechart mobile" app for ios today!!!

You just made my day. I've been waiting on that thing to drop all year. I guess its "Summer 2012" somewhere. LOL.

Bad news is you just added another log to the fire on my plan to upgrade to a new iPad over this holiday season... I was starting to resist, and now... game over!

PS... You also just added another reason I need to add a door to my shrink wrap. WM here I come. That's a good use for two rewards certificates I guess!

Ok, the wife got me the Samsung Galaxy 10.1 and I'm having no luck down loading Navionics ..........HELP!!!!!!!!!

I got a galaxy 10.1 also... completly love it! ill take a look at the app..
