Hyrofoil or not?

1981 Yellow SRV192 – Merc 485 - Rubber Duckie

Should I replace my old hydrofoil or just take it off? It is cracked and oxidized so it needs to go but I have heard several comments about not using them. I do seem to have a harder steer to starboard which one post said removal would help.

All of the marketing and many other users say 20% faster on plane, better fuel economy and less cavitation.

Get your stopwatch out and try it out. Do some runs with it on, then take it off and repeat. That's really the only way to know. A foil will always create the same amount of lift (in pounds) no matter what boat it is on (assuming equal water flow). However, how much real effect it will have on a boat will vary greatly due to hull design, length of boat and weight.

It'd be hard for anyone else to tell you, definitively, what it will or will not do on your boat. Even if someone had the same boat as you, their opinion of the affect it has could be different from yours.
