HWH Bypass Kit?

I have this kit on my Attwood brand water heater in my boat and it failed to work this year.
The kit has one bypass valve and one check valve (plus the hose).
After two years of service the check valve failed to seal causing the kit to not bypass while I was trying to winterize.
It was back filling through the check valve into the water heater.

I repaired / modified the kit by installing the same bypass valve in place of the check valve.
Now I need to position both valves to bypass position and it works fine.
Basically, I purchased two of the same kit and tossed the check valves into the toolbox.

It should last a long time now.

thanks for the input. I was wondering about that check valve myself. Seems just as simple to have a bypass valve on both sides.

I installed a new HWH & bypass kit with a few pics two days ago. The female adapter ( outgoing hot) & 90% elbow ( space saving for this job ) sold separately. I thought it might be helpful to archive in this thred.Tim

That's what I have but, needed to buy two kits to do it..
Did yours come like that?

Mark, Though my kit came with two valves, it isn't enough to complete the job. As I believe (most) Sea Ray factory installs are set up with only the back flow preventer on the incoming cold water side and a standard male nipple on the outgoing side.So you need to swap to a female adapter for the outgoing hot water side. Otherwise, with both valves in ( bypass ) the SUPPLY water will go into the HWH thru the hot bypass valve. So....the outgoing bypass ( Hot ) valve has to be installed male end toward HWH. Conversely, the incoming ( Cold ) has the female end of the valve facing the HWH.:smt101 Tim
