I'm heading up the Hudson this weekend. Probably end up around Newburgh-ish. Does anyone know some good anchor spots up there?

A lot closer than Kingston is the north side of Croton Point. A large, concave bay on the eastern side of the river, it has a sandy, gently sloping bottom. It's also very popular, but at this time of year it's probably not crowded. Pretty exposed to northerly winds but you can see storms coming down the river so you have time to prepare. The south side is nice too, but it gets pretty shallow beyond the "point" of the bay and has a muddy bottom.

Croton Point is where my marina is at, and it is nice. might end up just throwing an anchor there. I wanted to go up the river further and spend the night, but if I can't find a nice spot, I might just end up coming back. Kingston is a ways further, a little further than I was planning on going but i'll map it out and see.

thanks

Trip

Kinston is about another hour and a half north of Newburgh and well worth the time ,if you have it.There is an anchorage behind Popeil(spelling?) Island aka Bannermans Island which is just north of West Point.HOWEVER DON"T TRY to go behind the Island on your own as there is only 1 approch ! And there are MANY submerged ROCKS around the island! You can get local information and info about the anchorage at the Cornwall Yatch Club(nice people)which is just west of Bannermans.Good Luck and Have Fun!Let us know about your trip...Tom and Linda

Oops, sorry Mike! I'm rather partial to the Point, though...my parents keep their boat at Westerly in Ossining, and we've spent many a fun day in the north and south coves. Used to water ski in there before it got too crowded (more often on the south side -- but it does get shallow quickly in there).

Which marina are you in?

Jeff

I'm at Half Moon Bay. It's right in front of that line of condos. I also hear that the fishing is excellent at the point too. right now it's not crowded at all, but i'm sure that will change real fast. Weather looks great today, we're off. I'll be back with pics and some video.

Looks like Kingston it is.

Thanks

Mike

Beautiful day today. After I got to the marina I found out that there was no water as it was being repaired. So we decided to make a day of it instead of an overnighter. We headed up river and got about as far a west point and decided to turn around. There were a ton of trees in the river from the big storm and I didn't want to knock a drive off accidentally hitting one. Then we threw the anchor a croton point and hung out for the rest of the day and fished. Heading back out tomorrow but we'll probably head down and explore.

We were up in your neck of the woods (well sort of) on Sat and it was a great day! You are right about the debris from last weeks storm. It was like going through an obstacle course at times. :smt101

Hey, that's where we went on sunday. We headed down the river and into the harbor. What a ride that harbor is..... between the giant freighters and the billion ferries, the mish mash of wakes was crazy. A couple of times I dipped the bow into a wake. Then we headed around the island up the east river and into the harlem river and through the rail bridge back to the Hudson. What a cool trip. 10 hours on the water yesterday. Burned through a whole tank of gas.

Just picked up on this thread... spent this past weekend with the new boat on my part of the Hudson - so much debris - very hard to avoid. I spoke with one of the only other owners who put in at my marina last weekend - I believe in a 280 or larger - he said that he won't take her out on the river until the 15th. By that time they will have opened up the locks (which was supposed to have happened May 1 but was delayed) and a lot of the debris will get flushed down river. I may take heed and enjoy some time at the dock this weekend instead of risking it - but the wx is supposed to be fantastic. BIG rule of boating - better safe than sorry. It's hard to live by the rules sometimes! :smt013

Just heard on the news that there is a sewage brake near yonkers and it's dumping 480 million gallons of raw sewage into the river A DAY. so no swimming. :smt009

Another great day on the water today. cooked some hotdogs on my new grille in Newburgh.

Then I got a tree branch stuck in my drives. I have no idean how it got wedged in there but it took a bit of time to get it out. I was cruising along and then I felt the boat pull to one side and the RPMS on the one engine fell about 800 or so. I shut the engines down and saw an 8' branch stuck in there. never saw it, must have been under the water. Seems like everything survived. Maybe it's a good idea to wait until the junk clears out of the river.
