How To Replace and Improve the Sea Ray Systems Monitor

In case you don't know the USB100 is what connect's to the N2K network with one connection. And the usb connection connects to a PC where you need to run N2KAnalyzer and that is the software tool needed to configure things.

thank you
thats the answer I was looking for.
I removed the DSM and brought it home and trying to program the two rims with it.

I had a USB100 originally and upgraded to the IPG100 (bought both used). I would recommend having one of these if your going to have a DSM or other Maretron products onboard for the sole reason of being able to back up your configuration.

Programming is a lot of time and button pushing and has to be done in a lot of cases on the DSM. If the DSM has an issue, you can spend hours reprogramming it, or just download a backup. I did it once, never again.

Thanks
Finally getting a hang of it

If you have multiple displays (DSM) or other multiple devices do you perform/select the backup functions based upon instance?

I just saw the price for the ipg100

But the IPG100 also allows the use of Maretron's N2K View application on your phone which can be used for remote monitoring. Take a look at the link I posted above. Well worth the cost.

Yup understand the hardware - question is - if the programming is different between the DSM's and other devices is it saved and retrieved by instance?

So I guess that is a good question. But my guess is serial number as you have to go to the physical DSM to perform the save that is transmitted to the virtual DSM within N2K Analyzer. It is a hex file that is saved and Instance number alone would not work as it could easily be duplicated.

You allude to a really good question, can you restore a DSM from anther's file. I am thinking the serial number might be an issue.

Yes...I have a left and right display backup.

@ttmott I went to the boat after work today and verified that the backup files are by device serial number. When you backup the files your on the device that is being backed up and you select the DSM250 emulator by serial number. When you restore a file it's the same thing in reverse. You select the device the file is going to by serial number. Dave pretty much explains that in his tutorial.

As a follow up - It seems rational then that I can't copy from one and use on another?
Like if you wanted to use my setup or I wanted to copy data from one DSM to another?

You can do that, even can transfer to the DSM150, not that anyone has one of those. I think I am the only one it seems.

Anyway, when you select the DSM to transfer to, the only thing on the screen to tell the difference between them is the serial number. As mentioned I have a DSM150 and was able to transfer a DSM410 file to it. Works like a charm.

I programmed the DSM250 emulator and saved the file. It is a master file of sorts. It contains all of the screens I use on all of the DSM's. I then removed screens and sent the file to the DSM I wanted it to be on. Saves on a lot of programming.

The problem is you need to remember to save the config file when you change something. I didn't do that for sometime and I lost all of my programming from this summer on main DSM in my AC panel. The one that is always on with alerts in it. If it wasn't for an old backup I would have to start from scratch again. The IPG100 (or USB100) makes it all possible.

Based upon what you verified aren't the files tagged with the device's S/N?
Or, is the S/N only a file ID and the files can be used on any like device?
Or, no tag on the file but only the devices are ID's with their S/N's.
Or am I confusing a "config file" with a "backup file"?
Or, am I making too much of this and need to dig in and get the USB100?

I think you are making this more complicated then it is. Essentially there is nothing in the file that tags it to a device. The naming is up to you. And you can send any DSM file to any DSM. What makes the file unique is you initiate the send on the DSM you are backing up. If you are restoring the file, you select the DSM on the emulated 250 by serial number and send. Basically that simple. There are options in the send screen on the phyisal DSM for the information you are saving. These files when created as all are complete backup(s) of the DSM. So that when you get a new virgin one or rest one to factory, you can just download a file to them and have it up and running in minutes.

I would get the IPG100, there are more benefits to getting the IPG then the USB. The USB and IPG let you use N2KAnalyzer which allows you to update the firmware on all of the Maretron devices as well as do the backup/restore. The benefit of the IPG over the USB is you can use N2KView Mobile to view anything N2K. You create custom screens on your pc and send to the IPG from N2KView desktop. And use your phone or tablet and have a portable screen on the boat, also can be used for remote monitoring.

Even if you don't want those features just yet, it's nice to know you have them for when your ready to dive into that.

’m just having issues with the alarms

I can trigger the alarm and see the screen change colors. But I can’t get it to beep?

Alarms are different than input triggers. Now you need to program an alert to activate on the input triggering. The display does not beep, you need the ALM100 for that or the DCR100 and external sounder(s).
