how to clean brownish color off gelcoat?

Just wanted to post that I was able to pick up a 5lb jug of Super Iron Out this past weekend at Lowes.

My boat sat in the water pretty much all summer, and had a nasty brown ring around it from lake Hartwell.

I tried several cleaners, but none of them were able to clean the stains away. I mixed a gallon of cold water and a cup of Super Iron Out and the stains vanished!

I think next time I will try warm water (that's what it recommends on the bottle) and see if it works any faster.

Thanks guys for the great recommendation!!!

Go to your nearest Dollar store or grocery and buy a bottle of toilet bowl cleaner. The kind with the crooked neck. Put on wet boat brush and brush on the brown/yellow color. Let sit for 3-5 mins and rinse off if you want or just let it do its thing. It will not harm anything... No need to scrub the brown off afterward. It will dissappear...

I do not recommend Lysol brand however since it does not work as well as other brands. It has a different ingredient in it from all the others.

This is what I use,and cheap!! Rinse well as said

Try a product called BioKleen. they have many products and work great. I used the fiberglass hull cleaner and it took the big brown stain away. Check the web site for all the data on their products.. and they are made in the good old USA....

We just put her away for the winter and used a $1.38 bottle of "The Works" TB cleaner to clean all the above bottom paint water/brown/rust/river water stains. Wipe it on, rinse it off - quick and easy, gel coat bright white, no discoloraction of the bottom paint.

Another vote for IRON OUT. I used it for the first time a few weeks ago......awesome results.

Yes Iron Out is good stuff. I mix mine in a spray bottle and it instantly goes away. Been using it for two years now and have never seen any problems with the sealer I use or damage to the bottom paint. However I do wet the bottom paint first even before washing to eliminate streaks.

Can the On & Off cleaner be used for the entire boat for an easy spray on, rinse off cleaning prior to shrinkwrapping? I thought I could use a pump garden sprayer followed by a good hose down.

Do you suppose the iron out is safe to use on the pvc tubes of a dinghy??

I can't say about the Iron Out, but I know that the Slimy Grimy stuff is fine. I would guess "yes", that the Iron Out stuff would be fine. It sounds like the Iron Out and Slimy Grimy are pretty much the same - at least when it comes to effectiveness and being safe to use.
