How to check your turbos out?

Can someone point me to proper procedures to check out my turbos?

I am not an expert by any means but have replaced or re-built (purchased a rebuilt) both turbos on my 3116's. What is was told was there are 2 things with turbos; 1) the fan should not have any play or wobble in the post. You can check this with your fingers. 2) the gap between the edge of the fan blades and the housing should be very very small.

Frank or anyone else, please correct me if I'm wrong.

Installing boost gauges is cheap and will tell you more about the performance of the turbos than anything else.
