How to Change Impellers in 8.1's with Pictures

With such a frequently replaced disposable vital part you would think the manufacturers would figure out a way to make replacement so much less complicated. Why not just open a door, replace the impeller and close the door?

They do make them. They are call Crusader Engines. Ditto Volvo.

Merc is just not a well designed engine unless you are a boat mechanic and charging by the hour not the job.

Thanks.

May need to stock a spare - or not? What's that system called where you don't stock items, you just order them when you sell/need them? I can limp almost anywhere on one.

for 8.1's 47-862232A2
Also fits some other models but I don't know all of which ones.

By the way, I replaced my stbd water pump a couple of months ago. My shop guy bent the pulley when he pulled it, so, I had it straightened to get by for the weekend, then, had to replace the pulley after getting a new one. So, I've done the stbd side at least 4 times. I can actually do it in less than an hour.

Remember the mechanic that told us he could do it in less than an hour and we couldn't believe it. Now, I believe it.

I finally got mine changed last night. Man what a PITA the big red hoses are:-(. It took a while to start pumping though, I got a little nervous at first, but eventually they both started to pee after about 20-30 seconds.

Well done! You can prime them by loosening the blue plastic plugs until water runs through.

John,

How long did you end up taking to do the port impeller? And I recall you did remove the water lift muffler - is that correct?

Not more than a couple of hours. I did move the muffler the second time, but not the first. The details are in this thread somewhere. Moving the muffler saves a lot of pain and doesn't cost any time because of the time saved in the impeller change. The tubes come off easily. It can be loosened up off the mount and rotated away from the front (aft) of the engine.

Thanks John,

How long is it going to take them to get the new boat together?

If you miss working in a 340 ER, stop by anytime when you are "sitting in the crew lounge" in ATL!

I just finished my first impeller change and not looking forward to the next one!! I am sure it will be much easier the next time. I followed the advice for the 8.1 but the 6.2 mpi horizon is a little different. I found out the hard way that you need to remove a bracket and loosen a few bolts on the Gen 111 fuel module. It is in the way when trying to pull out the impeller housing. There is about 1/2 inch lip that cant make it by the crankshaft pulley, either poor design or I dont know the trick. I have the brass housing and I hear the new plastic ones are easier to remove the hoses. Again I am new to this so any advice on making the next change easier would be great. Have A great Easter!!

Missed this one. Apparently, about 5 weeks. Should be almost free and clear Monday Noon. In Anchorage, Ak right now (ironic). Be home early Monday. Thanks for the invite, but I don't spend as much time sitting anymore. We have -88's in ECP now, so, the commute is a little easier. I don't plan on being on reserve, but, you never know.

Nice addition to the thread. Happy Easter.

Looking to do this job this coming week. I have a Bravo 3 so I dont believe I have sea cocks for this. Is this correct?

I just want to make sure when i pull the pump off that water will not start rushing in. Don't feel like sinking the boat this week :(
