Last night there were riots in at least 20 US cities. The media is linking the riots to the death of George Floyd at the hands of the police in Minneapolis, MN.

It would appear that the rioting ("demonstrations" as the MPLS mayor calls them) have spread beyond a reaction to Floyd's killing and are happening now just for the sake of looting, burning and causing mayhem.

So how safe do you feel where you live? I'm not talking about anything to do with COVID, but rather from any violence from rioters? On a scale of 1 to 10, with 10 being VERY SAFE and 1 being NOT SAFE AT ALL, where are you right now? I hope it's a 10 for all of us, but tell us what you're thinking.

I'll Bite, I live 30 miles from Sacramento and 45 miles from Oakland. As long as I stay either at home on my 15 acre ranch or on my boat and do business in my community I feel a safety level of 10. I have a niece and nephew that live in Berkeley right in the belly of a possible powder keg and frankly my safety level feeling on their behalf is a 4. Looking back in history it is quite conceivable given the leadership of that community and our state capitol I expect it to get worse before it gets better.
Stay smart and safe

BTW GFC, Where was the pic taken in your profile? Looks like you took one of those wonderful European river cruises? We have done a couple and hope to do more if the end is indeed not quite here yeto_O

I’m very sorry to say this, but these riots are the result of a violent culture that I am afraid is deep in the genes of people who think “burn baby burn” is acceptable in a civil society. Tucker Carlson summed it up perfectly in his editorial last night. For those who don’t watch Fox News, this would be worth watching.

Good eye, CD. That pic was taken in the German town of Cochem which is on the Moselle River. We did a Viking River Cruise trip in the summer of 2018.

I put your question to the boss. That’s who matters to me. She says 10 at home and when walking and being out in our area. 10 on the boat and normally 8 while walking the trails and bike paths along the Buffalo water front near the marina. She has been walking very early this year, because of Covid there are way more people out later in the day, and it is harder to keep an eye on everyone.
We also have a large LEO presence around the marina. We are a state park marina, we have state park police, CBP has a boat at the end of our dock (border town), Sherriff marine, and Buffalo police are always around it seems. Of course I know anything can happen at anytime, but I also am very comfortable in our area. I can barely remember the riots here in the 60’s because I have always lived in the burbs, they are not a concern where I live, and most likely not a concern where we keep the boat.

We did the Viking Lucerne to Amsterdam in 2018 and the Prague to Paris in the summer 0f 2017. Next we want to do a trip east thru Budapest depending on future world events. Viking does a great job and we had zero complaints.
Cheers

At home a 10. The last time we had a riot it occurred in the CBD where I have my office. Not going there tonight. I suspect the looting that occurred across the country last night will occur again but worse tonight. Word is just getting out about all the free stuff in the stores.

I feel safe in my area. We live in a town of about 9000. Step-son is a detective and a member of the CERT team in a nearby town. He said they were put on stand-by last night in case of rioting but his response was the people in his town were too lay to riot and only 4 showed up...lol.

I just came back from Boardman, Ohio and all was quiet there too. Did see quite a few police cars out. I had my M&P Shield on me and will be carrying that or the Glock at all times when leaving the house at least until this calms down.

Son is in West Chester, PA right now and will be heading home soon taking the turnpike and going past Pittsburgh. He has his gun with him too but I told him if he gets caught up in a roadblock either go through the grass, turn around and go back the other way, or if he feels he is in serious danger just drive through the crowd and don't stop. That 2500 Ram will knock a pretty big hole in their wall. Hate that it would come to that but if I feel I am in imminent danger than I am confident I can articulate that in my defense.

And just to throw this out there. I know a white guy that did not obey police recently and ended up getting his face kicked in by the officer while he was handcuffed. Officer was fired and the guy is suing the township. This isn't about skin color but about 1) people not complying with police commands 2) bad cops that should find a different career if they cannot control themselves. I will also say that in my time as an LEO I heard a few stories about cuffed guys paying the 'stupid tax' and there were just as many white victims as their were black. Just depends on the extent of damage and the media coverage. I don't condone it in any way, shape, or form and would not let it happen if a fellow officer would have done it in front of me (and luckily I never witnessed it). There is a certain level of not questioning your brothers in blue but at some point sanity needs to be called for here.

As long as I am 50’ from a Trump flag. I feel like I am in good company :)

Shit is going to hit the fan tonight. Be careful out there.

Something else to think about. Called and asked my step-son where their evidence is stored. He said it is in a regular locked room at their station. I asked about written evidence. It is stored on servers inside the station and not stored offsite. So if the Minneapolis station that was burned down had a similar setup then all physical evidence is likely destroyed. This means that there is a good chance that homicide suspects that are awaiting trial may have the charges dropped as the evidence is now gone. Or unsolved homicide investigations may not be solved due to loss of case notes, etc.

So in this event there may be murderers that will be set free while awaiting trial.

To not have an offsite backup would be incredibly stupid and a complete failure by any remotely competent IT professional.

Very safe. Those idiots burn their own neighborhoods.

I agree. But not sure of policy. Sometimes cloud storage/backup is not permitted due to security reasons. There may be some offsite storage but he didn't really get into that. The gist of the conversation was about physical evidence and paper notes. I quickly asked about offsite storage meaning for digital evidence and he said everything was onsite. He may have been referring to the physical evidence when I was referring to digital. Either way, the loss of physical evidence could be devastating. I would hope the written reports resulting from fingerprint/DNA, etc would be saved digitally and would be accepted into evidence in court and missing physical evidence overlooked. But in the case of say a knife if only the prosecution having had time to examine a knife when the defense has not had that chance I would bet that evidence would not be permitted.

I don’t want to jinks it but I’ll say a 7. We avoid the areas and trouble spots.

We had an issue in our neighborhood Thursday with looters ransacking the corner jewelry store, but it was obviously planned because most officers available were 5 miles away dealing with the rioters burning down University Ave.

I am worried about my wife. She works next to where there was rioting and looting yesterday. I’m praying this all slows to a halt by Monday.

One thing that’s noticeable is the serious lack of leadership in this state.

10... 20 miles south of Seattle where the knuckleheads are setting cars on fire and armed pretty good...

Mark, we have kids and grands in Ballard. Fortunately they left this afternoon for their home on Whidbey Island. From what I'm seeing on the boob tube the rioting in Seattle is in the Westlake district.

Ballard is calm from what we are seeing and you are right about the the shopping district/Westlake area...
