How much does your marina charge?

I'm curious. If you do your own maintenance on an engine or drives that are under factory warranty and later something goes wrong. Will it still be covered? It seems you might be giving them an excuse to deny a claim. Maybe I'm being overly cautious.

I've done my own maintenance on *anything* that has had a warranty I've bought (boat, cars, air conditioner, furnace, you name it) and have never had any trouble. But I would still hope that if something went wrong, they'd cover it. I hate saying "hope". It may give them an out, but I'd fight hard and show my own log entries that can give me a leg to stand on.

Besides, from what I'm reading here, I'm saving a ton doing the work myself so even if I screwed up and had to replace the engine, I'd still be ahead! "If you want it done right, do it yourself"...and I've proven it true the couple of times I've had someone else do something for me.

I keep asking myself why I'm not in the career of boat mechanicals repair/maintenance. To me, it seems you all are getting ripped off!

Yup, I'm paying for it, I've done it myself in previous years but a torn bicept tendon in my shoulder makes every bit of this process terribly painful. Luckily I got her waxed prior to the injury. I'm trying to hold out on the surgery until spring because 6 months off of work in the winter sounds like a waste of time and poor time management

Regarding warranty stuff, keep a log and keep all receipts and you'll be fine.

The truth of the matter is that most dealers love owners who do maintenance. Their boats are well maintained, cleaner and easier to work on than one that has been neglected or that the engine hatch stays closed until the engine won't start.

I can understand the DIY theory because in all honesty it really isn't difficult if you have a bit of knowledge and understanding about what your doing and how it works.

Seems like we arn't that high compared to you marinas, but at the same time I'm off-shore. And don't really deal with anything bigger than a 330

If I elected to have the dealer fully winterize my boat it would be :
each engine - $160.00 plus materials
fresh water system - $100.00
dockside water - $30.00
head and holding tank - $85.00 plus material
a/c unit - $50.00 plus material
oil & filter change - $140.00 each engine
fuel water separator - $20 each engine
power wash bottom - $75.00

This confirms I have an excellent marina. $360 to fully winterize boat, power wash, generator, air, water heater, faucets, lav, and block boat (haul out included in slip fee). I did change the engine and genny oils, so add $75 for materials.

Are changing the gasket kit and fuel filter very difficult? My marina chagres $161 for an oil change, which includes the oil filter and gear lube. If you add changing the gasket kit and fuel filter, the price goes to $501. Just curious. I don't have the time to do my own maintenance. The time I do have I would rather spend on the water, so it's money well spent for us.

What is this "gasket kit" you refer to? Changing fuel filter is a piece of cake. Unscrew it, screw a new one on. But gasket kit? No clue...but for the price I'd assume it's disassembling your engine and replacing all the gaskets...

For some, time is cheap. The way I look at it, if I didn't have the time to do my own maintenance, then I wouldn't have the money to afford a boat! :smt001

Just got the call from Lake Wylie Marina new service person Brenda. I have always had them do all the service work as it has been worth it to have them do as opposed to me having to find the time to work it out. Learn how to do it, probably break something in the process, etc. This may be the last year of that.

I had them do the three year annual service as well as change the impreller, no changing of the zincs as they are fine, pull the engine and check alignment, repack wheels on trailer.

Last year they did the same thing except for replacing the impeller and they charged $298.00. This year's total $650.00 that is with 20% off. There was no winterizing included in the numbers listed above

I may have to figure out a way for Dave S to help me with most of the stuff next year.....WOW what a difference. I did ask how much did they charge to change the impeller just so I would have a understanding of what the difference was and was told $210.00.

I will be picking it up this afternoon. :smt021:smt021:smt021:smt021

I believe that this "gasket kit" is refering to a sterndrive service. Atleast that what seems fair given the price.
