How fast is your boat?

My dinghy starts to become airborne at about 60 mph. 83 HP on a 600 pound boat.

Yeah my wife sarts flying around too wh...

Ohhhhhhhh never mind...

Just kidding honey! I love you.

My speedo is questionable at best.

To me, WOT speed is not really relevant except for bragging and showing off. My mechanic advised me against running above 4000RPM for more than a minute (even before we confirmed a heat problem).

With that said
280SS with T-5.7LX, Alpha 1

GPS Stats:
30 mph - 3000 RPM. Running sweet.
38 mph - 3400 RPM or so. Didn't even notice the throttles were pushed :)
46 mph - 4500 RPM WOT.

Generally 2 people, 1/2 tank fuel.
9 people, full tank fuel knocks 2mph off my 3000rpm speed.

My Pachanga 22 with 454magnum 330hp /alpah1 with 14.25x21 ss prop has gone 52 on gps at about 4300rpm which I know I still have about 300-400 more rpm to go and with a better prop should clip 60-62

Wish I could tell ya, but I have yet to get the nerve up to push it past 40mph. The more hours I get, the more confidence I will also get. Darn newbe :smt013

2003 20' select, 5.0MPI, Bravo 3, stock. Speedo hits 53-55 mph at WOT w/ 2 persons an 1/2 tank fuel, calm conditions. Never tried GPS but guess around 50mph. I only do this once every few outings for a minute or so to see if it's operating at top performance.

I have a 2004 180 sport and I can see 46 MPH with one person and 1/4 tank of gas and on glass. Otherwise I am between 42-45 depending on the weight and conditions. She has no problems at all to run at WOT. Steering is great and the boat sounds good. The only thing I wish was that I had a 4.3L so I could see 55-60. Always an upgrade possibility in the future

Mustard, ketchup, A1 and golden retriever fuzz!!

My boat tops out around 65 mph according to the GPS. The speedo doesn't register at that speed. I think it's because it doesn't work while it's on the trailer?

I'm with Dave on this one, running a big block at those rpm's tears ME up inside! I'm sure it's doing the same to the motor. I do it twice a year, early in the season and around mid-season just to make sure I can hit WOT and to verify appropriate RPM's/prop selection. It's probably less than a minute and then I back down to 3500 or under.

No querstion re the big block and excessive long runs at WOT. I run it WOT a few times a season but for a short blast then back to 2500 or so RPM. I had a 4.3 with 1500 plus hours that I ran WOT day after day for 7 miles at a time full out. That V6 never had a thing done but oil, plugs and one carb rebuid. The 7.4 would never take the abuse the 4.3 did.

Y'all under estimate big blocks. Keep it at the right RPM and they're fine. But it's still nerve racking running hard, no matter what motor. The more you can hear, the more nerve racking it is.

Try running a 540 at 5200 RPM with wide open exhaust rattling your ears and nerves. I start panicking at about 10 seconds and at about 15 seconds I'm watching every gauge, locked hard into the helm seat (with lanyard on) listening to and feeling every little thing.

At the end of last season I ran longer at WOT than I ever did, and it was messing with a Baja running off to his port WOT watching him dance on the chines freaking out thinking he was going to loose it so I was backing away just in case. I even hit the horn just to wave hello at which time he was quite freaked himself considering he'd just run side by side (until he got smoked) with a Nordic 28 Heat up to his max of about 70 MPH and now he looks over and sees a Searay deck boat running along with him. It was funny but at the same time I ran WOT for 2-3 minutes but it seemed like 3 hours. And this motor has really good parts that would hold together easily running WOT for an hour straight if the drive would hold up to it! But I won't try it.

Sea Ray Jim is right. The big blocks hold up quite well

I've often wanted a GPS in the boat with me at WOT. With my 1995 185 w/4.3L the speedo has hit 55 mph with calm waters...I figure it's a few MPH's off. But sometimes it gets a little skittish at that speed, sometimes I can feel it wanting to act like a skipping stone... is that Chining? It feels like there's only a little of the back of the boat, and the prop in the water. I trailer her and regularly wax the bottom (I've found my mechanic's rollaround works great for this!) and keep it in the garage year round, so it's quite slippery most of the time. I'm anxious to see if my new boat is close to being as fast as this.

Course, I'm just anxious to get my boat in the water at this point... ughh, we got another 15" of snow last night.
