How early can I get her wet?

Chris, Just let me know how those waves feel at 38 degrees, I'm curiuos.....Brrrrrr. When we sea'd our boat, we broke just outside the wall for darn sure had to turn back around, because the wind coming down the west coast that day was churning some seriuos waves, I actually do not know why they took us out to sea trial, and not waited for better weather..Good luck let us know how it went.....

I am doing my sunshine dance daily in hopes of a break-through day on April 24th.... I am thinking anything above 60 degrees would be great but I'd love some crazy 75 degree sunny day. If the weather is bad though, I'll postpone. Then again, if something like April 15th turns out to be 70 degrees, I'll be pushing out early (hopefully). I'll let y'all know.

Chris-
Hope you have great weather for the Sea trial. We got lucky on ours with 78 degrees and light variable winds. This year we intend to have her dropped in April 15th. That should ease the tax pain a little. It will be interesting to see where the marinas set fuel prices.
Mike

Here's to having some of your luck spill on to me!! Thanx for the well wishes Mike. May your tax pain be little and your fuel bill be small and may the seas greet you warmly while your interest rates fall.

Last year on the 24th I believe it was a beautiful, calm, ~70 degree day. We ran over to Put-In-Bay and had an awesome afternoon with a great ride home. Now, the chances of that happening 2 years in a row???......

I'd say anything short of pouring down rain or gale winds...put it in the water. Don't let cool temps deter you. Depends how crowded your marina is and their launch schedule...but be careful about canceling too much or you'll get shoved down the list to where you're launching late.

Ok Chris did his sunshine dance and we got 8 inches of snow depending on where you sit in Michigan, therefore... I elect to ban Chris from any dance either sunshine or rain.. dance...He insulted the GODS and now we have to deal with this snow issue again...... It took Me and My wife 5 hours to make it back from Grand Haven yesterday becuase of the snow and driving condition, this because Chris did a sunshine dance...What was he thinking....?...
Chris I hearby ban you from any dancing over there in Grand Rapids...Your redemption can only be drinks at Snugs sometime this summer.....I will let you know when it is time to dance for the Hot weather..... Ok Buddy?

At least you understand who your talking to... cause if I have to stop this Baot and turn around Mister......you have kids and you know what I'm talking about.....

I feel great to see other boaters worry about the season. I go in on 4/1 "April's fool day" and lay up 11/25 "Thankgiving" I like the sybolism and remember Nj is the garden state. No need for anyone below the Mason/Dixon line to post. We know the weather is always great.

Our marina is scheduled to open April 15th, and I intend to be there when that day comes...as long as the bottom gets repainted before then because of weather. I would like to see a week of "warmer" weather so I can get a good coat of wax on before it hits the water, but with 4 inches of new snow on the ground it seems so far away...

I did get the clearance from the marina... they said they officially open on April 15th so I should be fine with a launch day of April 24th. I seen the weather report for the last day of March is 60 degrees and thunderstorms here in west Michigan. But then it all gets crappy again for a few days. By the end of the week however, we should see some sun and near 50 so.. we're making progress.

Don't worry Boltman.... I have been exercising great restraint and holding off on all dancing. ;-)

Not Yet.... but it's getting closer... vehicles are sinking, and yesterday was the last day fishermen could have fishing shanty's on the ice legally on the VT side of the Lake!

This guy drove out from the access area I use normally, I'm pretty sure they got the car out - they had a rope on it from a tow truck, last I saw on the news Friday evening. Sad part is, all of the oils/lubricating fluids that made it into the water.

From "The Burlington Free Press - 3/29/08"
A Milton man and his dog narrowly escaped drowning Thursday afternoon when his car fell through the ice on Lake Champlain. Arthur Wells, 79, of Milton declined medical attention after the incident, which he said soaked him in freezing water up to his knees.

Wells' 2006 Subaru Forester was submerged by nightfall, about 150 feet offshore from the Van Everest Fishing Access Area, authorities said.

Wells said he had been driving casually across a familiar stretch of ice about 3:30 p.m. when it gave way. "I'd crossed that crack yesterday, and it was OK," he said Thursday. "Then the front end dropped right down. I was going about a mile an hour. If I'd been going like hell, I would have made it."

Wells said he routinely motors on the ice with Jody, his Jack Russell terrier.

"She has to have her ride every afternoon," Wells said.

The pressure-crack the pair seen Wednesday had widened overnight and could no longer bear the weight of Wells' vehicle, said Assistant Chief Chris Poitier of the Milton Fire Department.

Poitier credited a team of four Milton firefighters with the rescue: Lts. Steve Burke and Sean Carlson; and firefighters Corey Lombard and Tony Lauzon.

"The car was shifting as they moved in to extract him," Poitier said. "There was open water all around him. It could have been worse.

"It's the wrong time to be driving on the ice. When is it ever safe? It can be dangerous in the middle of January."

Rescuers wore buoyant survival suits and used a pontoon-equipped sled as they brought Wells and his terrier to safety.

Milton Rescue, Colchester Technical Rescue, the U.S. Coast Guard and the Milton Police Department also responded to the accident.

Wells said the incident had not frightened him.

"I've been on that lake and on the ice all my life," he said. "I could've gone in all the way, and it wouldn't have bothered me."

Rose Wells said she would not speculate on when her husband would return to his icy outings.

"But he doesn't want to say it too loud," she said. "I'll have to hit him with a broom or something."

That is funny and annoying at the same time. This old yahoo just keeps putting his life in danger by not checking the ice before driving on it?!! I have driven, biked, snowmobile, etc. for many years and always had enough sense to check it first... especially when it's March! That is simply negligent. And our brave responders risk their own safety and have to spend hard earned tax money to keep fishing him and his car out. They really need to start charging people like that for their stupidity.

Well ???????

You should be launched by now, unless I missed an update. See you on the water this weekend? 70 to 80 degrees forecast for West Michigan. The water is cold, but the air should be fine. We have been launched since 4/14.

We've been boating for well over a month now. Plan to run the boat down to Port Sheldon this weekend, maybe Saturday or Sunday for a day on the hook, spent reading and having lunch. Drop in if you're in the neighborhood.

We will probably be anchored inside the Muskegon Channel on Sunday, on Lake Michigan cruising to Whitehall on Saturday.

I finally got her in yesterday (Thursday) morning:thumbsup:. It was a long time coming when you keep in mind I was planning on being in the water on April 24th. They ran into some snags in Cheboygen, WI, getting her out of storage. They finally got her down to Milwaukee and decided to float it accross. I was able to go with them so it made for a great sea trial and orientation. Smooth sailing all the way to Grand Haven (Skipper Buds). They spent a few days getting the rest of the details taken care of and handed me the keys yesterday.

I am slipped at Great Lakes Marina in Muskegon now (A-15). What a GREAT DAY!! I am on the boat while I type this. I am having so much fun it's got to be nearly illegal:smt038. I have a bunch of friends and family coming to visit (the boat) this weekend so I won't be going on any distant cruises just yet... but soon... very soon.

Come visit if you are in the neighborhood. Hope to see some of you soon!! I'll get the pictures up (eventually).

Thanx all and happy boating!!
