Howdy,

Just bought a used 270 sundancer 1998 and the thru deck fitting for my anchor rope is a chrome fitting that resembles a small gas cap with a vertical space for the anchor rope to pass thru into the locker. I do not have an electric windlass. this fitting appears to be rotated so that the notch from the top piece is not aligned with the thru hull pieces notch which is biting on my anchor rope. I assume this is supposed to do this to prevent the anchor from slipping off the bow cleat while underway. the problem is I have no idea how to adjust this device to allow me to use my anchor. I have tried to rotate the cap piece but it will not budge. Is there a trick to this thing or is it simply frozen in place? if anyone has this fitting on their boat and please explain how to use it to me.
Thanks!

Yea, open and slide to the left. It should lock in position until you reverse to close.

Moose,

do you just twist and turn or is there a trick to unlocking it?

It would be helpfull if you could post a picture. The ones I am familiar with just have a spring hinge and lock open the way MOOSE explained.

David,

I will take a picture of it this weekend. thanks for the help!

I don't have a picture of mine but it is oval not round. Maybe yours is not the same. Post a picture and we'll get this thing right.

I found the hawse pipe on the internet.

It looks like the top just slip over the bottom piece. mine is frozen in place. It must have been stepped on at some point. I just bought the boat in September from a broker so who knows what happend. Do you think I can pry it off with something? I have tried to put a rag around it and twist and pull but no luck! I don't want to damage the chrome, any suggestions???

Yup, sounds like you got the right idea. I would start by spraying some PB Blaster (or WD-40, if you don't have the PB) on the inside, using the red straw. Hopefully it will seep down in between the the base and cap. Let it sit for a day, if you can.

Do you have a hard, non-marking hammer (usually has a yellow-colored head)? You could tap around the outside in various places to help loosen it.

Prying is OK, just take steps to prevent scratching and take it easy. Maybe tap with the hammer and light prying.

Another way would be to use the handle of the hammer and hit the cap from underneath.

Many ways to do this, just take your time and don't frustrated.

Good luck!

Dennis,

Thanks for the tips! I can't wait to get out to the marina and get to work! do you have any pictures of your 260? I would like to see it.

You know what? I didn't think about it until you said something... but, I don't really have any good pics of the boat! I have pics of various parts of it - mods and changes I've made - but no good, full pics. I'll have to get some next season.

It's good to see you have the wide-beam. I actually almost bought one of those. They're very nice and spacious inside. I came so close to getting it, but the buyer didn't want to move on the price (he was asking way too much).

Let us know how it turns out for you!

I don't see how you guys up north do it! I can't wait for each weekend just so I can go out to the marina and start up the engine and let it run while I push buttons and clean stuff. It is a little too cold to take her out but I can still go in the cabin and throw on "Master and Commander" and the heater and curl up in the vberth under a blanket with a beer. I enjoy just being there so much, I could not imagine having to shrink wrap and winterize my rig!! how long do you have to go without it?

You are right about the wide beam! when we were looking for our boat it was like night and day between the 8'6" and the 9'4" beam. I really enjoy the extra space and the stable feel while under way. I looked at other had a longer LOA but 8'6" beams and they still felt cramped compared to the wide beam. I don't have any goo pics of the boat yet either. I want to take some so I can put it on my background at work and daydream!

Ummm... We try not to talk about it. Thanks for bringing it up.:smt089

Just kidding with you, of course! :smt001 But, yeah, I totally get what you're saying about "just being on the boat". Heck, I'm happy to even just be sitting in the engine compartment and fixing/cleaning/straightening up things. It's very relaxing. Almost like therapy.

Sorry to bring up a bad subject. desregard my latest threar on the subject :smt001

I am not sure I am at your level of boat comfort. I bought my first searay 176 from the dealership in 2002 and it still runs like a top. The 270 I just purchased from a broker. it is a 1998 modle that only had 200 hrs on the moter but 600 on the generator! It was a floating cocktail lounge that was in immaculate condition. It looks like a brand new boat, but I get nervous everytime I open the ngine compartment. Since I have owned it, I have had to replace th starter, my trim moter has gone to sleep and I have had to discovery learn how to deal wih 100 gallons of sour water in my fresh water system... this is all durring the last 8 week ends! by the way... when I say sour water that is the understatment of the year!! I though I had a holding tank vent problem because it started to smell like rotton death when we used the vaccuflush. after treating the tank and poking things with a stick I realized that the vaculflush uses water from the fresh water system to fill the bowl!! OMG their was a white gel of rancid soup in the fresh water tank, the hot water heater, and every water line on the whole boat!!

Well, you're certainly learning a lot about your boat very quickly! The downside, of course, is that it's at the expense of your wallet.

Even doing little things can be very rewarding. Things like installing milk crates or rubbermaid containers in the bilge to hold various items... Arranging the galley supplies - clear containers work well, especially ones that have movable dividers for the small stuff.

Or, like you said, just sittin' back with a beer and watching the world go by is awful good, too!

I have had high and lows so far but I can't imagine not having her! How long have you been in the boating business?

To Temptress. You do not have the same hawespipe as I do. Forget what I suggested. Your's just seems to be stuck. Use a little tlc. Bang.

I've been around boats my whole life. I started working for a marina around age 15 and have been doing so since. I'm actually a full-time school teacher, but I do this full-time in the Summer and part-time the rest of the year. It's always been a passion of mine. I've been at Peters Marine for 10 years now.

How did you get into boating?

Thanks to all! It took a little WD40 and some tapping with a rubber mallet and she popped open! Thanks! now to figure out where water is leaking into my bow storage locker...
