I just bought a 1986 or 87 Searay Seville (bowrider style). It has a 3.0 liter Mercruser Alpha 1 inboard/outboard. I can't believe it but the front motor mount must be removed to change the alternator belt. Can someone tell me what's the easiest way to change this without damaging anything? There looks to be only 7 or 8 inches between the oil pan and the bottom of the boat, so not much space to try and support engine from below. I don't have a users manual or any kind of shop manual either....where could I find these items? Actually, I'm not even sure of the year the boat was built and the exact length. I think it may be a 16.5'. Haven't found any kind of ID plate yet with model number ect. Where would this be located? This is my first boat so have not learned about all the mechanical/electrical workings yet. Wish there was some good reading on web for general maintenance on inboard/outboards. I am totally unfamilar with the basics....engine cooling....how to change the oil ect. Any help would be appreciated.

You can buy a shop manual for the engine at West Marine. That will get you started. I would not try to support then engine from the bilge. If you have to jack it up to remove the mount do it from the top of the engine stringer, not the bilge. Try a Clymer's manual. You can probably get it at amazon.com.

the engine does not have to come out of your boat to replace this. there is a spacer on the right hand side (when looking at engine) with 2 bolts that hold it in. this spacer is the only thing that needs to come out to change this belt. the motor may have to be lifted to do this but a bottle jack under the engine should work fine. it really only needs to take the pressure off the spacer.
thanks
